10 kHz AM Frequency of the Week - 940 kHz

What can you get on 940 AM?

Here in Vermilion, OH it is IBOC hash from WWJ 950/Detroit and splatter from local WEOL 930/Elyria, OH during the day. At night when WWJ turns off IBOC and WEOL changes patterns it is a mix of stations with a Christian Contemporary station usually on top. They run a program at night called 'Night Light' where they take requests for Christian songs but I can never seen to catch an ID from them so I don't know which station this is. Maybe someone here knows who that might be.

On 940 in Monroe, WA I get nothing in the daytime.
At night I usually have KFIG Fresno, CA on top with ESPN (the ex-KYNO and KWRU). Sometimes CJGX "GX-94" Yorkton, SK comes in as well with country, and KWBY-OR makes rare appearances as well.
I've also gotten KICE Bend, OR, one time at sunset.

Mainly CJGX Yorkton late at night/early morning in the north Chicago suburbs. In the past I used to get Montreal, but not lately.

Far northwest suburbs of Chicago....

Day: WFAW (Fort Atkinson, WI), fair
Sunset: WMIX (Mount Vernon, IL), WCPC, Houston, MS (both of these are occasional)
Night: WFAW. In the past, CBM from Montreal was a regular. Also heard KIOA once in a while, more rarely XEQ.

From N. Alabama - WMAC, Macon GA (critical hours) and WCPC, Houston, MS days. Nighttime WMAC, some other station in background...

Right here at home in suburban Rochester NY, it's all splat from first-adjacent WROC 950 less than two miles away. But you don't have to go very far to get into a null of WROC's 1 kW signal. Montreal's CBF and later CINW used to be the usual 940s around here, once in WROC's nulls. I haven't spent much time on 940 with Montreal silent to see what else is there.

In northern VA, I get a very weak signals from both WADV Lebanon, PA and WKGM Smithfield, VA, (near Norfolk), during the daytime, both religious. At night, I get a mixture of stations, with WMAC Macon, GA well on top.

From NE NC. 940 days is WKGM Smithfield, VA. Sunset often hear WMAC Macon, GA and WCPC Houston, MS mixing with WKGM.

This has been a great DX frequency since Montreal has been off the air. During decent winter skywave I usually hear WMAC from Macon, GA and a few weeks ago I was getting a weak Spanish station as well which may have been XEQ Mexico City or WIPR Puerto Rico. It was barely above the noise floor and didn't stick around long enough for me to record anything useful.

940 Montreal is slated to return this spring as a French newstalker ( same group will also do English on 600 )

From SW Ohio

940 KHZ

Days
WCND Shelbyville KY - Weak.

Nights
WMAC Macon GA - Transition Time + nights.
WKYK Burnsville NC - Once.
WFAW Ft. Atkinson WI - Once @ night + transition time.
CINW Montreal PQ - Of course, when they were here.

Transition Time
WCPC Houston MS - Sunset. When conditions favor, they have a big signal.
WECO Wartburg TN - Sunset.
WNRG Grundy VA - Sunset.

I should be able to receive WMIX in Mt. Vernon IL, but so far, no luck.

Sorry to see that the Canadian ND pest will be back soon. Not that I have anything against Canadians, mind you. ::)

Here around Columbus, Ohio, if 940 has anything daytime it's a weak WCIT from Lima (even with only the 250 watts listed on Radio Locator). Incidentally, the station is almost as weak in St. Marys, just 20 miles from Lima, as in Columbus because of its highly directional pattern.
At night, the channel is usually a jumble. Many years ago, I heard a gospel station, I believe from New Orleans. But it's one of those channels that since I usually don't hear much on it, I end up skipping.

Before WWJ went to IBOC, you could hear WIDG 940 and WHAK 960 near sunset. If you go up near tip of the Thumb in Michigan, you can get those across Lake Huron if you can null out IBOC from WWJ. At night, was usually CBM 940 Montreal.

Daytime: WADV Lebanon PA at times, otherwise splatter from Philly's 950 WKDN(the former WPEN)
Night: used to get Montreal's 940(CBM until the CBC moved it to FM, then CINW) until they signed off around 2010.

FYI.

Back in the late 1970's and early 80's, WCIT was an excellent Top 40 station.

I used to spend a lot of time at International Truck Ft. Wayne IN, and WCIT placed a very good signal into greater Ft. Wayne. I would guess WCIT showed up in FTW's ratings.

Schmave. Have you tried 940 during the sunset hours? First WMAC in Macon GA, and then WCPC Houston MS show up just at some point before they power down. You can't miss WCPC as they are a religious broadcaster.

Night: All weak
KFIG Fresno CA
KMER Kemmer WY
KICE Bend (some nights really good with HSFB power)
XEWV Mexicalli (verified by SD engineers to be the off-frequency signal)
CJCX don’t seem to hear them. Vernon BC was a regular.

I have been looking for KMER-WY for a long time now. I hear the power is VERY low...

KMER is listed as 150 watts NDA night. It does get out.
But they are on the other side of the Rockies & Cascade range from you.

Strange thing is I've never heard KDIL out of Jerome! Day or night.
Guess they don't even have to be on the air since they have a high power FM translator.
Didn't check when I was down there Christmas Day.
