10 years of WKTU

It started with the end of Country 103 (WYNY) on February 3rd (I believe). For a week, Evergreen (the owners) stunted by airing owned and operated stations from different markets (including Chicago with Mancow). On February 9th, the day of air consisted of non-stop pulsating heartbeats. Then on February 10th, The Beat of New York was launched, consisting of the legendary disco call letters...WKTU.

It has been 10 years since 'KTU has been on the air with rhythmic dance...a station that filled a void since Hot 97 abandoned the format for hip-hop around 1992.

Granted, I have had my mixed moments about the station as a dance music fan. However, regardless of the directions they took, NO dance/rhythmic station has ever lasted this long in New York. Not Hot 103/97 when it was dance. Not the original 'KTU on 92.3.

With that, I say HAPPY BIRTHDAY 'KTU!

Tony,

You are one of best dance fans I've seen post on here and I have to agree with you. Even though we think sometimes that KTU is not a "real" dance station we tend to forget that it is the Legendary KTU... and what would we do if it didn't exist?

New York City would not be the same without KTU... and on that note I say Happy 10th Birthday to KTU!! Also a big thank you to the airstaff and management for keeping KTU on the air for a whole decade. Keep up the good work! And please try to add some more currents... ;-) Sorry I had to throw that in there... but nonetheless I hope we can post this again in 10 years!

The Beat of New York for 10 years straight.... BOOO YAH KTU!!

And thanks to Tony. I remember Tony's work to bring a dance music radio station back to NYC. Before KTU came back I was requesting in the NY Daily News that a NYC station bring back Broadway Bill Lee. KTU hired Bill after his stint at KMEL (San Fran). I loved their week of stunting. That was the best stunting from a NYC radio station (thanks Steve Rivers).

The new KTU would rank in the top 10 NYC music radio stations of all-time in my book.

Happy Birthday Day WKTU!

(Can't forget the media asking WYNY spokesperson Jim Ferguson if WYNY would change format from Country to Dance. Over & over.)

Anybody have the aircheck from the first time KTU signed on as "The Beat of New York?"

I would love to hear it when they stopped the heartbeat and changed the NYC radio landscape.

It's at the Format Change Archive. The direct link is http://www.formatchange.com/wynywktu/.

The "formula" for the change (announcer, background music) was used on other stations around 1996-97. Was definitely used on the flip from WNNN to WJKS in the Wilmington, DE area.

Hey I would like to discuss Radio with you in particular dance music radio. Love to here your thoughts and opinions since i have been both a favorite listener and biggest critic of the station depending on times. Well congrats for 10 years on the radio!

Thanks Justin,

Wow listening to that actually brought a chill down my spine. Talk about the best way for a new station to be introduced!

Are they acknowledging their Birthday over the air with special promotions like some stations do?

Listening to that again, makes me realize KTU is still pretty similar in format as then... they sampled a pretty large mix of dance songs and as they put it...

"Music you don't hear enough of on Hot 97, Z100, PLJ... Music you can dance to... Music you can romance to... Music that makes you feel alive... embark on a radio adventure that will take you to new places and some that are STRIKINGLY FAMILIAR..."

To me, strikingly familar sounds like classics, the songs everyone knows. They're still doing what they signed on saying they would, and although I'd like them to take us again to a few more new places, I think the mainstream isn't really dance happy right now so those new places are limited... everyone seems to be in a retro kick, from the mass 80's, 90's and Now variety stations, to the Bobs and Jacks out there... music tastes go in cycles... KTU has held on during the lean dance years, when other stations across the country just disappeared, I'm sure it'll be ready when dance explodes to mainstream again... heck, it may even just lead the charge.
______________
