100.1 Springfield

The KOOL FM Facebook page is announcing that its '60-'80s oldies/classic hits format is coming to 100.1 in Springfield this afternoon, simulcasting WACM 1270. That frequency doesn't show up in Radio-Locator, not even for a CP. So what's the power and estimated range of this station?

I don't imagine it will put a usable signal into Meriden or Southington and its reach to the south and east will probably be limited to avoid interference with the 100.1 in Southbridge, MA.

I'm in the south end of New Britain, CT. I'm not getting a hint of that station. In fact, I sometimes struggle to get their 96.1 FM translator coming off of West Peak in Meriden, CT to my south.

There's also WHOOPEE FM in North Adams, Mass on 100.1 FM. I would guess Red Wolf has some good engineers since they have a 104.3 in Hope Valley, RI (KOOL Radio) and a 104.5 in New London. (BOMBA). That's pretty close.

Springfield to North Adams is a pretty long trip for 250 watts, especially with the Berkshires between the cities. Wonder where the Springfield 100.1 is transmitting from and its HAAT.

The audio for 990 AM and 96.1 FM from Southington/Meriden was a full 3 minutes 10 seconds behind what I heard just now on 1270 Springfield. I will assume the audio on 100.1 is in sync with that of 1270 AM? (I can't pick up 100.1 FM here.)

The 3 stations are no longer a direct simulcast. They play the same exact music and feature the same voice-tracked DJs, but now all 3 stations have their own commercials and liners. - They have computers set up in West Springfield (1270), Southington (990), Glastonbury (96.1), and I think Ledyard (1180). The separate computers for 990 and 96.1 allowed 96.1 to stay on the air while 990 was off the air for 15 hour 2 weeks ago after a major power outage in Plantsville (the result of a 17 year old crashing a BMW into 3 poles). WNTY 990/96.1 uses Westwood One hourly news while WACM 1270/100.1 and WSKP 1180/104.3 uses CBS News. WNTY has local news from Teresa and Shawn at WBMW at 6AM, 7AM, 8AM, and 9AM. WNTY also has Southington High School Football and still has the Italian Show and Lutheran Church Mass on Sundays.

No sign of them in Downtown Southington today, not that I thought there would be. Yet strangely enough WCTK 98.1 New Bedford/Providence was almost crystal clear.

In the Kohl's/Aldi parking lot off Rt. 5 near the Wallingford-Meriden line, I heard Boz Scaggs' "Lido Shuffle" on 100.1 this afternoon and thought it might be Springfield, but I checked 96.1 and they were playing another song. Waited for the ID on 100.1 -- it was WJRZ, Manahawkin, NJ. Never expected to hear that one around here without the benefit of tropo.

I'll be heading up to Vermont next weekend and will check 100.1 on the car radio from Hartford north to see when the WACM translator starts coming in. A coverage map would certainly provide clues, but for some reason, Radio-Locator.com has yet to acknowledge that 100.1 is even in use in Springfield.

On my car radio Friday morning, the 100.1 translator began to provide a usable signal around Exit 42 (in Windsor Locks) on I-91 northbound. I forgot to check for it north of Springfield on that trip, and on the return trip I didn't check until I was in Holyoke, and it was coming in loud and clear there.

According to the maps,it looks like 100.1 is transmitting from the WACM tower (which I thought was being moved) on an island in the middle of the Westfield river. Should put a good signal into downtown Spfld and close suburbs.

Also Fybush reports there will also be a new 250W translator in East Longmeadow on 105.1 the old WNEK frequency. Located on the 1600AM tower simulcasting that station. Interesting, since WNEK was only 9 watts but could have benefited from more power. I guess they managed to squeeze this one in despite the 105.5 on Mount Tom.
