100.3 "KROCK"

Is it me or has 100.3 KROCK gone completely satellite? Where is the local flavour it has (or are the DJS on vacation)

I tuned in at 5:00 or so and heard what sounded like a DJ from their main office somewhere out there.

I know it's also a holiday weekend, too

Any answers?

It's a good station just needs some local flavour.

Rob

They ARE satelite is why.

Sure once in awhile they have a local jock (when they show up) but if they cant make it in its Jones Voicetracks from across the US

Though the VTS sound much better than the jocks.

And imaging?...wow

This station is another Hale beauty.. done to the minimum...and that is being very nice

Well I'm not sure who this "Hale" character is but he sounds like a real jerk. What a waste of a good radio station.

Rob

*THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT DOES NOT REPRESENT THE THOUGHTS OF 100.3 KROCK, STAR BROADCASTING, OR ANY OF ITS EMPLOYEES WITH EXCEPTION TO THE ONE TYPING. :) *

hehehehehe wow. Interesting conversation starting up here.

Funny what you can stumble across when just surfing the net, huh?

Ok. Let's start dispelling some rumors. Rob, you sound like a reasonable guy, so I'm sure you'll get this. OMpronk though, I would be interested in your credentials and radio background. I say that because while you outwardly come off as if you know what you're talking about, those of us truly "In The Know", if you will find your statements moderately ignorant, with all due respect.

1st. I'll assure you that K-Rock isn't Satellite Radio. (notice the spelling, by the way) Not in the way that I think Rob was asking. We DO utilize the services of the Jones Radio Network whis is provided via Satellite during dayparts which aren't staffed live, or for whatever reason the live jock isn't able to attend. But if you live in Ft. Walton Beach, have attended any of the last 3 concerts at The Block you would AGAIN notice that we are live, actual people, as well as the many "Freeloader Picnics" we've hosted for local clients over the past weeks.

2nd. OMpronk. Does OM stand for Operations Manager? If SO, I would CERTAINLY think you would have enough tenure in the business to know a voice track from satellite programming. A VOICE TRACK, for Robs benefit, is a pre-recorded voice bit done dry, or on some programs "real time" with the actual music log, and then sent electronically to the station using it. Clear Channel has the system down pat w/ their NexGen program that uses the actual music log of the receiving station....very neat but no. What differentiates that from "The Bird" as we call it is if someone shot The President, you would know it.

Ok. Now that we've covered that, we'll cover "Hale". That would be Ron Hale, and in my 13 years on the air, he's probably the kick assest boss I've ever had, and I've had a few...from major market, to the SUPER market....:) There are some that don't care for him, but seriously Rob they're usually mixed up wanna-be superstars that either used to work for Star Broadcasting, or can't get hired here.

The crack about "when they show up" is valid, and I'm probably the worst one. Because this is Ft. Walton, and not FT. WORTH (Dallas is market #6..the Janitor makes 60K... ;) ) A few of us, myself included have fulltime gigs during the day that sometimes run into our airshits. Myself, I'm self employed. Or rather, am in the family business and there are days that just run long and I can't get to the station. That's where we're lucky enough to have a Satellite Network strong enough to still be good enough for you to listen to. We hate it when it happens too. I've had the opportunity to meet TONS of our listeners, and every swinging one of you kick MAJOR ass. I'm thankful for all of you, even pronk. ;)

Plus, and I'm sure you'll get this too. When you're brand new, sometimes you just don't have the budget to hire someone to do every single shift in the building. We have a local Morning Show, and a local Afternoon Drive Show. It won't be long though, before you get your local flavor more frequently, I promise.

The good news is Rob, it won't be forever. K-Rock, while still not on the level of a 99Rock is gaining ground EVERY SINGLE day bro. We've only been on the air in this frequency since August, and are coming on like a freight train. There will come a day in the not so distant future that we'll have it all ironed out.

THE BETTER NEWS is, it sounded to me like you're at least diggin the music, and that's what it's REALLY about, right? Not the imaging, and yeah the local flavor matters, but as long as the music is good, we've got 3/4 of the battle won! :)

There'll always be people to nit pick the imaging, (That's the boomy voice guy between the records) or have some attempted hurtful crack about the satellite jocks being better to listen to...hell, he may be right for all I know..I've never listened to me...I may very well suck....lol

But the story here is we're workin' on it. Maybe in the meantime we can get pronk to give us some pointers on imaging, and maybe even come do a voicetrack session with me, and some of the other live jocks. We're always open for suggestions and constructive criticism.

That said, I didn't go to the trouble to activate an account to get into a p***ing contest with anyone, just thought I would toss my 2 cents in the bucket. I won't respond to attempts at intimidation, or childish slamming, but WILL have an adult conversation with whomever wishes to get in.

Hope you'll stick around Rob. If it sucks NOW and it's STILL good enough for ya...IMAGINE what it will be! :)

Thanks for listening -

DOH!

I MEANT AIRCHECK session..not voicetrack.

Damned Jagermeister -

Rokjok --- I would like to engage you on a serious level and not throw to many jabs unless they are valid. I understand
you are hanging yourself out to dry here, so if you care not to respond to specific questions or issues just say so vs.
avoiding the question.

First, how long have you been in radio? Radio is certainly an "interesting situation" along the Panhandle. Keeping your day job
is seriously a must. Enjoying your radio gig is nice to hear. I certainly understand the VT-ing, but VT-ing on Jones is
always a bit more interesting.

Second, I will avoid any comments on Hale. Just promise us that if and when things change on what you think of
RH, you'll be honest and tell us. Maybe that will never happen. Certainly, the bulk of the comments have been less than
positive on here or in various legal documents. Maybe it's all just a series of misunderstandings. How long have you
been with this station?

I am surprised that Hale allows live vs. VT and being late, etc. I wouldn't say that it's a positive to listeners when things
seem sporadic and uneven. The same is true for not having a budget to basically advertise yourself, when you sell advertising.
The signal issue will always keep you limited and yes, you have nowhere else to go but up. I seriously wish you best on that.
I also appreciate your integrity, something lacking in the industry, in general, to admit and be willing to take advice to improve.
Don't believe for a minute that imaging doesn't matter. Or brand recognition. Little mistakes or blowing off small details can
cost you millions and millions. Trust me on that last statement, it's crucial. Especially in a radio market as crazy as FWB and
PCB where there are more radio stations than possible listeners. It's tough to generate revenue to splurge. The C-companies
can spread the loses. You guys have a huge mountain to climb. Trust me, if you're making any money, your team should
be proud, proud, proud.

I hope you don't find yourself disillusioned with K-Rock. Sadly, unless the pattern has seriously changed, you may. Everybody
deserves a chance and it's nice to see loyalty. I hope it's returned to you! Good luck and keep us posted on how things are
evolving.

Jagermeister has a new 1.75L size. Even comes with a t-shirt! Just don't mix it with the kool-aid! ;DBTW --- glad you actually
care about listeners. That's huge.

Hey Tibbs -

Thanks for the note bro -

To start, and without doing a resume, which I suspect we'll here from someone shortly, I've been doing radio for about 12 years. I "retired" if you will from corporate radio 2 years ago, when I came here from Corpus Christi (ex Clear Channel guy) to go into the family business.

From Corpus I was "voice tracked" into several markets, so I'm well versed on how that works. Great for the jock gettin' the money, sucks for up and coming talent. Prior to that I've got Albequerque (The Big I) Birmingham (WZZK) Atlanta (KICKS 101.5) to name a few. Again, not doin' the "Hey..I've been in the majors so I know" thing...just answering your question.... :)

About Hale...dude, I learned a LOOOONNNNNG time ago that there are always 3 sides to every story. Side A, Side B, and the truth somewhere in the middle....lol I've been with Ron since the day the station came on the air back in August. Have there been some bumps? Sure. Have I heard the horror stories about payroll checks not clearing...and losing The Ticket down the hall? Yep. To THAT I say that mine always clear, and The Ticket guys are still down the hall. Again, I'm not consulted on every aspect of the biz...but I'm no kid, no spring chicken, and I pay attention to ALOT of things that go on around me.

I also agree with what you say in regards to "on again off again" jocks. Heck yeah man....people are creatures of habit, and can often take the stance of "well, at least the other guy cares enough about me to show UP", and I get that. Most times, I make my show BUT sometimes I don't. Can't be helped. Down the road once we've handled the 1st year maybe so. Don't really have any other answer for you than that....We're NOT Cumulus, Clear Channel, even Quantum for that matter we don't have the budget off the bat for...hell....I dunno......150K annually for a Morning Show/Mids/PM Drive which STILL wouldn't really pay anyone any money, but I guess you could live off of it. I live in Navarre and have a pool....lmao My house could be a TRAILER and it's 125K LMAO So I gotta have my day thing for now anyway....

......reading.....reading...... :) :)

I might not've made my statement clear earlier about imaging. It's SURELY important, ESPECIALLY when you're the new kid on the block. If you know the game, then you KNOW that you're "new" for at least the 1st year that you're on the air. I guess I'm somewhat of a purist at heart though, and I only meant to say that if we've got THE MUSIC right, then we're off the to the right start. With everyone going more Classic Rock all of a sudden..it's more important THAN EVER to make sure people know who they're listening to, which we do a great job of. I was responding to pronks off-hand crack about the imaging is all. Since there's only ONE dead segue in the clock I'm certain he's commenting on the quality, not the frequency.

Disillusioned....not likely. I appreciate your straighforwardness my friend, but again I didn't just fall outta the dj booth....lol I'm loyal to anyone until they prove otherwise. Hell, I even tried to befriend a local morning guy until one night he got drunk and teed off on me for some ridiculous thing, then suggested I should've died after a recent motorcycle crash. So, I'm not jaded by my big chance on the radio or anything like that. I've HAD my big chances.....done it, LOVED IT LOVED IT, but now it's more about quality of life, helping my folks run their business, and having the opportunity to have some fun on the air and live in Florida. Nothing more, nothing less.

RE: Listeners......dude, you MUST love them. They're the reason you have a gig. All it takes is that one time that they come up w/ a piece of paper, and want you to write your name on it, so that they can take that piece of paper home and say you wrote on it to get that. As long as you never start to believe your own press....did that in Atlanta...it was really REALLY ugly.....lmao

I never mix Jager with ANYTHING, especially Red Bull. That's THE MOST annoying buzz. [EDIT] faced drunk, but you wanna mow the lawn...pressure wash the driveway........SOMETHING.

Appreciate the chat bro, and all my best -

Rok

[EDIT-profanity]

What stations do you own? 98.1 100.3 103.1 and 92.1? Radio-Locator still has 93.3 up as a C.P.

Honestly, I think your better than 99 rock. I just hope after a hurricane, we can tune in for up to the minute details from your studio. After Ivan, the Cumulus mix ruled the airwaves.

How is 92.1 doing in the ratings? It's competition for Z.

IF you are going to push to 98.1, that would be awesome.

92.1 appears to be doing well with the teens here.

OHH one more question, HD radio...should I buy one? (do you have plans to broadcast in HD?)

-Rob

Hey Rob,

I don't "OWN" them, I just work there...I think I know what you mean though - ;)

The only 2 that are in the building now are K-ROCK, and 98.1 The Ticket, which has been the topic of much ownership speculation. 92.1 is our old frequency, and 103.1 is out in Destin as well.

In reference to 98.1 before it comes up, remember what I said about 3 sides to every story? There's a 3rd side to "The Ticket" story as well, that while I DO understand some of it, I don't really have a dog in that fight, so it would be better if nobody asked me any 98.1 stuff, since I don't want to speak out of line and get it wrong. I'm privvy to some information that NOBODY on these boards is privvy too, since I get to be in the meetings at the station. Even on The Ticket thread, nobody over there knows anything and unfortunately sometimes people want to just say things so they can be perceived as the one that knows.

I will just say don't everyone feel too let down if it stays right where it is, NOT just for a year or two in litigation, but on a more permanent status.

Thanks for the props over 99 Rock. They're a good station and the PD and Afternoon guy are good dudes. I've chatted w/ the night guy, and the girl on the morning show via myspace some, and they're both pretty cool as well. Never met her co-host, although we were right NEXT to each other at Bikers On The Beach a few weeks back, and didn't know. :)

I appreciate TOO, your concerns during Hurricane season that you might have to "jump ship" on your favorite station to get up to the minute information. I would remind anyone reading this that during Ivan, there WAS no KROCK, but 98.1 The Ticket was literally live 24/7. No easy task when you figure that there are only 3 people locally on that station.

As we continue to grow Rob, we'll continue to be more local, more often. Only last week we brought Rob Brown over from 98.1 for Saturday Mid-Days so you can have someone local on the weekend while you're drinking beer by the pool, or whatever it is you do...so we're trying bro...I promise. :)

On the issue of HD radio, don't buy one on our account. Honestly I don't know what our plans are regarding that.

Thanks for listening, and if you have any tips that might create a better listening experience my email is attached to me here somewhere I think..... ;D

Later,

Rok

Is that what ya call a show now "Airsxxts...Yawnnnnnnnnn!

take it easy bro...it was an obvious typo -

No need to be an ass about it dude. I forgot the "f"....not the end of the world.

Have a great day! :)

rok

Thanks for the info. Actually, the only station I think stayed on was 88.3 until power was restored at the Cumulus building. WUWF is a strong signal for being over 30 miles away.

..this was back when 100.3 was COAST

One other station I listen to is 106.3 which is very faint out here (Near Navarre). Don't know where their transmitter is but for a 6KW station their signal goes far. One of the reasons why I own an XMirius i mean XM.

When tropo is up, forget it. I picked up WJOB many times. (out of Tampa) on that freq. I still would like to hear WSIX and WSM - FM out of Nash. I guess it depends on God's mood :)

Rob

you might be right...I know I hear stories around here about living on Ramen Noodle for 3 days and all that....maybe the came back up quick enough to be on the air and still be stranded.... :)

The biz is doing quite well, thank you :)

We're opening a new store in PCB as we speak, and have just signed on property here on 98 for yet ANOTHER store, so we're pretty excited. That'll be 5 stores.....pretty nifty I say. :)

Rok

;D Just a little humor....Dude's a little out of style for me...."Pal"

APE

PCB seems to be more happening then FWB. I still think Ivan ruined the tourism confidence. Hopefully, this hurricane season will reveal only a few tropical depressions (we need them) and a category 1.

Cox Cable 39 used to air "tourist tv" but haven't seen it on lately.

Rob

Hey Rokjok it was very interesting to get a little info about K-Rock. 75% of the shops I go into at work on Eglin have your station on. I was wondering if you guys pick the music when you are live? I noticed a little more variety and a better mix of classic rock during the live shows. Keep up the good work. Love the live shows. Hopefully you guys will get a mid day live show also.

I have to give K-ROCK credit for getting some pretty positive comments. That's rare on here!

Does anyone remember the old WXCR 98one Classic Rock? Are there any similarities? Or is K-Rock
just the typical 500 Classic Rock songs?

BTW --- Rokjok, dude on your case needs to chill...the airshit spelling was priceless. Mistake or not! ;D

Halon and Tibbs -

Thanks for the positive comments guys!

First to address Halon -

Regardless of the bad rap that my boss gets from time to time, he does allow me a degree of creative license during my show. Both leads at both dayparts (AM DRIVE AND PM DRIVE) have LOADS of major market experience, have programmed stations in big cities, and "get" what we're doing. We've both driven the big bus, and the guy that OWNS the bus knows that, and trusts our judgement on what we do on our shows. Sorry for the resume', but that information's important to what I'm about to say.

That doesn't mean to just go off on some wild tangent and just play crazy sh*t, but yeah...I'm allowed to massage the music logs a bit as long as it's justifiable, as are the morning guys.

Tuesdays for instance we do "Deep Cut Tuesdays", something I came up with to "justify" getting off the music log some...lol

We try to do it kinda "old school" in the sense that the music logs are a guide really...not the law. We DO stick to them, because someone went to a lot of effort to research the music and all that jazz...but nobody's gonna get canned for NOT sticking to it verbatim.

Which leads me to Tibbs -

The GREAT thing about what we're allowed to do, ALONG WITH the Jones Satellite programs their music is it's NOT the same old 500 Classic Rocks songs in a bucket. I did that in Dothan (Rock 102.5) and HATED IT! That's where consultants come in, and really take the fun and spontaneous feel out of it, and it becomes the same old cookie cutter crap.

You CAN'T program a Classic Rocker like anything else in the world. Billy Squire had more than 2 hits in his life, as did Van Halen, Sabbath, Zep, hell..the list can go on forever. ALSO, whether we like it or NOT, 80's stuff IS classic rock now....lol Point is, there are THOUSANDS of songs to choose from. You have your staples, that are going to HAVE to be played until they reach OLDIES status, but around THOSE songs, you can really spice it up, have some fun and dig DEEEEEP for the really good ones!

What's setting us apart in the market right now is that WE DO dig deep, generally have SOME theme thing goin' on, whether it's a Lost Classics Weekend, Deep Cut Tuesdays...SOMETHING to have a little fun, add a little spice to it....

Hell, we're not perfect and don't claim to be. We're just a bunch of 40 and 50 somethings, goin' back to what we did in radio when WE were in our 20's and 30's...no rules play for the fans kinda crap.....not what some suit in Atlanta is telling us to play or say.

Sink or swim, we're having fun. :)

Rok
