I missed this one, and pretty badly; apparently KXOJ flipped 100.3 (KCXR --Taft, OK) from what I think was a KXOJ clone but not a simulcast, back to The Kross: "The Next Generation Of Christian Hit Music" around November 15th.
According to the website, "The Kross is no longer just a rock station. Now you will find a great blend of hit music, including hip-hop, pop, rap and all kinds of rock flavors." I listened a little while tonight & didn't hear hip-hop, rap or anything other than basic alterna-pop (or "college rock" if you prefer) but perhaps that was just that hour or just at night or... I dunno.
I was a little surprised to hear a couple of groups I heard on the secular pop & alternative rock stations... perhaps "incognito" Christian groups. I'm a bit out of the loop these days so if they aren't screaming "Jesus, Jesus, Jesus" I may have missed it. Secular media doesn't often make a big deal out of a rock group of Christians... unless it's Alice Cooper, for obvious reasons. ;D
The signal is still just as terrible as it ever was, as you can imagine. I doubt there's anything that can be done to improve Tulsa coverage considering 100.1 out of Bartlesville not too long ago upped their power. I'm sure they're squeezing as much as they can out of that stick. They're 4 Kw on a 125 m tower trying to hit a town 40 miles away... that's no easy task for the brightest engineer.
Considering they're not supposed to be hitting all of Broken Arrow & my seek stopped on them at 61st & Memorial, I'd say they're doing pretty good!
Still, I'm curious as to why they're trying it again. If it was worth pulling the plug on once, why bring it back in the midst of such a terrible economy?
Could it be because Air1 seems to be showing up on nearly half a dozen places on the dial in the Tulsa area? Hard to believe they would be hurting KXOJ, but I don't have access to the ratings or the financial ledgers. If Air1 IS the reason, will this rim-of-the-rimshot make any difference?
For clarification, I wish them well. Options, especially Christian music options, are ALWAYS welcome. My concerns are from a business standpoint only.
