100.3 The River

I tuned in to WQRV in Huntsville today and it soulds like they, or at least Clear Channel, has tweaked their format some. They have been airing slogans like "greatest hits of the 60s and 70s" and so far the music has been just that. They cut the fluff from the 80's and today that the soft rocks like WRSA and WAHR have, and finally made their way back to an oldies format. I have to admit it sounds great, since the closest channel I have that offers oldies is WKXM Gold 97.7 in Winfield, and WAFN Fun 92.7 in Arab. I have been waiting for something to change in local radio for a while now, and my wishes have been half way granted. Now the only thing left for now is to hope that WKLD returns with their new format, which I hope is oldies or classic country (#2 would be better in my opinion) :)

I don't care for River's format since my only reason listening to the station to begin with was for Rick and Bubba. Back when I used to listen to them, every now and then you would hear a chirp and the audio dropping out. That technical difficulty made it very hard to listen to the show so I turn to WZZK, even though that wasn't much better due to weak signal up here. I remember when the River just starting airing the show it was a lot worse. Listeners would actually call up and complain while the show was live. Hopefully, for the Huntsville audience, that has stopped by now.

Speaking of wishes, my wish for a rock station that won't have Nickelback and '80s hair metal in their playlist will never come true. So instead, I've turn to 'net radio for my '90s-today rock fix. I doubt the rest of Huntsville radio will change for the remainder of the year.

Fun 92.7 in Arab has a fan in Florida. I've been listening to them online lately and they sound really good. I know it's off the satellite but I like the music choices. I'm using the Radiolicious app from iPhone and it works well. They seem to specialize in smaller town radio so it's fun to check some of them out. I listened to WOPP in Opp for a while this morning and the "LA accents" made me homesick!

That didn't last long... sounds like they are back to the "Songs you can sing along with... 100.3 The River". They started to mix more 80s into the music instead of purely 60s and 70s like last week. Wonder what spurred that on? Sunny 98.1 (1550's FM translator) is advertising on the local TV stations now. I'm a big fan of Scott Shannon and it's good to have oldies back in the market, but I'll admit their 250 watt FM signal doesn't travel far. I wish they could LMA on one of the class As.
