100.3 translator finally on the air?

I think what needs to happen or should happen is that they need to combine both the Mobile and Pensacola markets together. Then I think we would get a better picture of the success rate for the stations within one market. A lot of the stations in the Mobile can be well heard in the Pensacola range, and vice-versa. I wonder if that day will ever happen - it will make looking at the PPM's more interesting.

Nothing says a lot when you have to check the radio book once a year in the P'cola market to see how the #s are doing.

Now to answer the what-if scenarios: What I'd like to see happen is a Hip Hop station go head to head with 'BLX but people down here tend to stick with the heritage stations so that might not drive a lot of the listeners away from 'BLX. A Classic Hip Hop station might but it seems like in a lot of markets, it fizzles out pretty quickly. I don't see a full-powered gospel channel but perhaps Cumulus Mobile starts providing sub hd channels, then we could see Gospel on WBLX-HD2 or WDLT-HD2. But alas, that won't happen anytime soon...because Cumulus is cheap.

And what's with 97.5 WABD volume so high? Turn that you know what down. And personally they just don't sound like Q100 or KRBE. I'd pefer KISS-FM any day. I wonder what would happen if WABD never came into existence; would 107.3 Kiss FM have higher #s? Why can't 107.3 FM boost its signal in the Mobile listening area if they really want to 'compete' because they are clearly failing in that category. What's the true intention of having 107.3 KISS FM if they continue loose in the TOP 40 battle??!?! I mean, all do respect to Matt running the station but c'mon, iHeart - give the man some slack.

Aannd, why is the primary hd channel on 99.9 lower than the rest of the iHeart stations and it can barely come thru?

Oldies Monday, indeed. My favorite podcast is on vacation this week so I've actually listened to the radio again today. I'm enjoying the wide range of 50s and 60s music they're playing but several songs are glitchy. They play the intro and skip to the outro and the rest of the time is silence, until the next song plays. And sometimes before the top of the hour it's either jazz or reggae music for a few minutes.

I honestly think there are enough HD radios out there now that putting WGOK on someone's HD2 would be a worthwhile move. Historically both WBLX and WDLT have had pretty robust HD signals, although BLX has been off HD for ages and WDLT won't decode on two of my three HD radios for some reason.

WRGV is limited in where it can go and what power it can use due to spacing issues. Obviously Clear Channel wanted it to put more signal into Mobile so they moved from the Molino tower site to Baldwin County. At the Molino site they ran 100 kW, but the 70 dBu fell short of Mobile. The slight jog west and drop to 50 kW now puts Mobile in the main coverage area and more of the western suburbs get a better signal, too. I'm sure despite it "officially" being a Pensacola station the hope is it bleeds a little from WABD. And it helps CC's bottom line that some of their facilities are co-located now on the same tower.

It can't increase power or move any further west, most likely, due to 107.1 The Monkey in Gulfport. I suppose they might could go back to Molino at 100 kW but they would only gain trees and cows from that move, as well as a higher power bill. Adding a directional antenna to restrict power towards Mobile might net them more power but again it'd be wasted as Pensacola already gets a great signal (HD excepted).

BTW, I've often wondered why Mobile & Pensacola aren't one radio market to match the TV DMA but I've been told it has to do with not wanting to further dilute the ratings of the AMs, which cannot reach both markets. I think there was something about hurting ad revenues, too because the current setup allows them to charge twice for ads airing in both markets — once on a Mobile signal and once on a Pensacola signal, although that is only likely true for formats with duplication, which there aren't many.

Combine the markets andCumulus is screwed. Pensacola has 5 Cumulus stations plus local coverage from 3 Cumulus Mobile and 3 Cumulus Fort Walton stations. The FCC shouldn't approve of one company owning 11 full power signals in one metro.

Edit to add:
Mobile has 4 Cumulus stations and local coverage from 3 Cumulus Pensacola signals. One company owning 7 radio stations in the Mobile metro isn't that bad.

Classic country? Wednesday.
Country music from the 1980's with an Eagles song mixed in. What would that format be called?

It is according to which Eagle song? Lyin' Eyes hit the country chart, and many of their songs would be acceptable on a Classic Country format.

For those keeping count. Thursday - Slippery When Wet

Is online streaming for 100.3 W262BL/WMXC-99.9HD2 available for people outside of the Mobile metro?

Groove, you nailed the song and learned me a lesson on Country radio. Thank you.

There's not a stream for 100.3 that I've been able to find, but Slippery When Wet is available along with Real Fun Beach Radio and Real Oldies on iHeart.com.

I'm glad someone is keeping up, I lost track a few days ago when I started working on adding the Muscle Shoals page to my site.

It looks like the are just feeding Iheart online stations on the feed and triggering a ID every once in awhwile.

It's rather disappointing that they picked these same formats to rotate over and over. iHeart should have tons more choices to feed through; it could easily be a different format every single day if they wanted, even if they happened to exclude one that was picked as a permanent choice for a future launch.

I've gotten the impression from listening to most of the mini-formats that some are meant to be played over the air. For example, the oldies format seems to have a one minute schedule break before the top of the hour, as they stop the oldies and insert the same jazz song each time. Then there's the TOH ID and back to oldies. I can't stand hair metal enough to listen for what they do, but I believe a similar setup is used on the classic country and smooth jazz feeds.

UPDATE 8/17: 99.9-2 and 100.3 is playing Hip Hop/Urban AC referring to themselves as 'The Beat'. And yes, I did hear that correctly. Who know's if this is the FINAL format.

I think iHeart has been listening, and maybe, just maybe they are responding. That is, WBLX needs a bit more competition. We'll see how this turns out.

Figures they do this on the day I'm too pressed for time to check the format in the morning!

It's worth noting that iHeart runs "104.1 The Beat" via HD-2 on WMJJ in Birmingham, so it appears they are copying that playbook, and the music currently matches what's playing on that station.

Edit: There's no trace of a website, branding or anything local to this broadcast, so maybe they just loaded up a new set of formats to rotate through for a while.

I heard the liner, "Beats <pause> From Back in the Day"
The pause was just long enough to insert a channel number.

But this isn't classic urban? Is it?

Some songs have most of the words censored. One song had Notorious BIG in it. Otherwise I've never heard anything of the 10 or so songs/artists I heard earlier today.

I think the "back in the day" is just for a single classic song, at least that's how it played out when I was listening earlier. Everything else was contemporary. And definitely stuff I'd never heard because I'm a middle aged white guy. ;)

Ahh, we aren't the target demo. Gotcha.

Today would have been a good day to launch Classic Hio Hop.
Could have played "Straight outta Compton" a bunch. Then some Grandmaster Flash.

Well, I'm not. Don't really know about you, but I'm guessing. ;)

I may have grown up in an era bookend-ed by The Sugarhill Gang & The Fresh Prince, but I was listening to The Monkees and Steely Dan instead. So the classic is lost on me and the modern is definitely lost on me.

A 250 watt translator on pretty much the tallest tower in the Mobile (City) metro.

Looks maxed out to me.

I suppose they could add a second translator on the Eastern Shore or in Pensacola.

It would be nice if 99.9 HD went up to 4%.

What does that "4%" mean lol but I think I know what you are trying to say, it's low...correct? If so, then I agree 100%
