100.5 in Fort Wayne?

I was in Fort Wayne today and I heard a station playing urban gospel on 100.5. This was NOT an iPod transmitter from a nearby car. I found it while driving through downtown, and it was at it's strongest right around the Coldwater and Coliseum intersection. I lost it quick north of Fort Wayne, but was able to carry it to just south of Garrett.

The only thing I can find is an LPFM application, but FCC shows it as a construction permit. Can any locals shine more light on this mystery station?

Don't know about an urban gospel station...but I'll be listening for it now.
(I do know that the Festival of Lights that they do at the FW Children's Zoo and Franke Park has a local low-power transmitter, usually on 91.5 FM, right now, but about all that ever screws up is 91.5 out of the high school at Columbia City. That station is 2.6 kW ERP, and it doesn't come in well there.)

I'll keep an ear (and an eye ;) ) out for that station.
Dutifully reporting, Juan Bodley

WQSW-LP looks like the station you were hearing. I suspect it's the same application you saw. Its application with the FCC indicated it would air mostly an urban gospel format, though it would also air programs catering to the African American female community, especially health care issues. It also is apparently only going to operate 12 hours per day.

It could be the LPFM. Stations may begin tests under a construction permit, and they may receive Program Test Authority which allows regular broadcasts but will not appear in the CDBS.

More about WQSW 100.5 FM ...
http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/fmq?list=0&facid=124483

100w Horizontal Only at 30.5m ... it should be on one of SBA's towers on St Joe Rd about 3/4 mile southwest of the intersection of I 469 and Maplecrest Road (on the north side of Fort Wayne).

Coverage (per the FCC):

The most recent application.

IIRC the station can begin program tests as long as they file for a license within 10 days (unlike translators that must file their license app before beginning program tests).

I think 100 watts and 30 meters is max for an LPFM. You can sniff some the maxed-out LPFM's from over 30 miles away in the Coldwater area. I carried WQSW to just south of Garrett (probably a good 15 miles) before it faded to WWKI and WKXA. Pretty good considering Fort Wayne has a crowded radio dial and 100.5 itself is a crowded frequency.

This would agree with the signal being at it's strongest in the vicinity of Glenbrook Square. I knew I had to be getting close, as it was actually putting slop on 100.7 in this area. It seems to be reliable from Illinois Road north. Anywhere south and west and WWKI really starts giving it a fit.

100.5fm in Fort Wayne might be currently simulcasting 1410AM WLAS in Lafayette, which at last check, was playing the best of dead air (the long form/album version). I caught the end of a song, then dead air.

I think I heard the WQSW calls...
Over the weekend every time I heard them it was the "Best of Silence" CD they were playing, but then today (Monday) they were live and kicking. If they're antenna is over by Maplecrest Rd it's no wonder I got a full signal strength level on my receivers (both Yamahas, so the meter is not true, but close.)

Be interesting to see what kind of programming they offer.
