100.5: Re-gifted 96rock in a shiny new package.

I love it! And how bout them stealing "Atlanta's Rock station?"
DaveFm dropped the ball. They had all this time to put the "Rock" back in Atlanta but continued playing Tori Amos drivel.

WAR ATLANTA'S ROCK STATION: 96..ahem... Rock 100.5!

yeah, it does sound great. Dave will continue to be a disaster, this will also kill the River and hopefully 96. Dave almost sounds like an elevator music format.

I think of Dave as the new Peach. There are enough varieties of classic rock now, who says every station has to be that? If you want to keep your radio on a station with a modern classy kind of sound then Dave is a real blessing.

It would be great to reduce the River to a trickle or a drought alert. Although I am not sure that will happen so quickly. Somehow some people just love that bland River station. Never understood the attraction there. I can not listen to that station at all. Let's hope Rock 100.5 has a broader palylist than the 250 songs the River plays and has not touched in over a year. Obviously this station plays a broader range of music with Guns and Roses and Collective Soul already played.

This is the station I have been asking for on this board for awhile now. A real loud in your face Rock station. Something with swagger not something neutered like the River.

I got sick of the river after 2 weeks.

That's what we all want from our radio: A modern, classy sound. ;D

I didn't say Dave isn't filling a niche, and I'm sure they'll get a spike from 99x's demise, but Rock 100.5 will do better in the ratings and generate substantial revenue. Mike Wheeler could've hired the RG's and changed Dave back to Z93! It would've done MUCH better than DaveFm in both ratings and revenue.

Unfortunately, there's nothing shiny or new about it. Clearly they didn't want to take a chance on something fresh and chose to stay in the safety zone. I would have been more impressed with a classic hard rock format (Dio, Rainbow, April Wine, Zebra, deep cuts from VH, montrose, hagar, a throw in of some bands that were considered 'metal' bands in the 80's but are more hard rock). The question I have is, will I hear anything new from any of the artists that they've played so far ....and will I hear it on this station?

When I first heard music on Rock 100 at 10am, I also thought "hey it's 96 Rock with a new frequency!". I prefer the newer rock music played on 961, but this will give me an alternate.

I like the Bert Show in the morning, but can't listen to Top 40 (ugh!).

The Regular Guys were great this morning, though! 8)

Rock 100.5 is aiming right at the core of the Rock category. While Project, Dave, the River and formerly 99x go after certain niche parts, they are going straight for the Heart of Rock n' Roll(no Huey Lewis reference intended). I am surprised CBS did not do this first. It was a big hole in this market just waiting to be filled. All the months of planning for the Zakk Tyler morning show and then within two weeks this strikes like a firestorm through Atlanta Radio.

Even the logo is very similar to the old 96Rock logo, Orange and Black and a similar font style.

When do you ever see a major broadcasting corporation go with something other than a safe and well-researched format, or play deep cuts? Creative and original programming would be great, but radio is a business these days and not an artform, and none of these companies are willing to wager their bottom line on anything they would even remotely constitute as a gamble. It's sad, but it's a concrete reality.

What were Z93's ratings before Dave? Weren't they the same during every format flip since the Top40 heyday? Why would going back to a past failed format work any better now, especially with the current competition.

I know it's popular to suggest Dave return to Z93 but I believe nobody in the radio business understands the effect of format changes on the listership. If a station has changed formats more than once in the memory of a potential listener, that station is just not going to be given serious consideration. The listener will not jog through their memory to determine what's being played now and be prepared to reach for the radio if it's not what they want, they'll just tune in elsewhere. It's the same effect as a weak signal that may or may not be listenable at any given location or time. The listener isn't going to waste any time for a potential unknown and will go the the known.

Okay, let's not get too carried away here. Rock 100.5 can be a very good station. It's filling a void. Like Andy, I too would like to hear some of that "old school" rock that I listened to back in the day. Heck, how about an "Old School Friday Nights" show. Tear it up with some of that kickass metal/rock that we all love. (It's okay to admit it. Really. Just leave the Capezio's and bandannas in your closet where they belong.)

You do understand thatRadio is a business and yearning for the hard rock days pre-hair metal is very niche. I don't see anyone yearning for deeper cuts of Aprilwine(potential oxymoron), Montrose or the Red Rocker. That format would sound stale with in a month. Just not that vast of a catalog to pull from and again not a whole lot there to attract an audience. Perhaps you should start your own internet radio station.

I loved it when TRG called it "Project 9-SUX-1" :p

They blew one thing--first song after TRG should have been "Baba O'Riley" by The Who...the first and last song played by 96 Rock.

To Barbapapa's point..... that was then, this is NOW. Z never had a good morning show but was consistently in the 2's despite competing for much of the same audience as 96rock. All you have to do is look at the "River's" ratings to know that rock can win in this city. Dave may be making money but it's the dullest rock station around. And the one shining star, "Orff," is about to be moved to overnights. They could've launched the return of Z93, hired the RG's, filled the rock void, and actually would've made some noise.

Instead, they hire a guy who's done "guy" radio for years for a station that caters to chicks. And if they were planning on tweaking the music it's too late now! Nice!!!

Props to Cumulus for seeing what needed to be done and making it happen!

My only complaint so far is that they couldn't even wait an hour before playing Bad Company--an artist the River is already playing to death. If 100.5 starts up with the Fleetwood Mac/Eagles nonsense I MIGHT JUST LOSE IT!!!

Actually they did play that and Yes.com is showing that was the first tune played
