100.7 the River tweaking towards classic rock?

I don't listen to the River, so bare with me if this is a change that's been present for awhile. I saw a post over on the Bring Back 96rock Raleigh Facebook, about these changes, and they posted the last ten songs played, per the River's website.

As of this posting, here's what they are:

White Wedding- Billy Idol
Frankenstein- Edgar Winter Group
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band- The Beatles
Surrender- Cheap Trick
Pink Houses- John Mellencamp
Panama- Van Halen
Call Me The Breeze- Lynyrd Skynyrd
Dreams- Fleetwood Mac
Break On Through- The Doors
Bennie & The Jets- Elton John

I also saw on the BB96RockRaleigh Facebook, that River had played GnR earlier today, which is something I never remember them playing. Since YES.com is down again, I don't have another way of checking a broader aspect of what they've played.

I've noticed this as well. The station has sounded awful since the tweaks after Christmas so good move on their part.

I wonder if Clear Channel will bring "The Brew" into Raleigh? I know CC in St. Louis flipped their Gen-X station to "The Brew" a week or so before Memorial Day, and it features no jocks (locally based or Premiere Choice), except for Bob and Tom in the morning. Also, The Brew in Oklahoma City is similarly formatted, but features Lex & Terry in the morning, and Cindy from KEGL in Dallas voicetracking PM drive.

The River moniker doesn't fit the type of music they are playing now. Plus they are still calling themselves Classic Hits. They need a better name to fit the Classic Rock format they have now. Also noticed they are sounding alot like 'RDU did, which is good.

What about bringing back...... 106.1 RDU. Move the jocks and the music over.

Put "Rush Radio" on 100.7.

Great idea! If this happens, I assume Clear Channel would change the call letters of 100.7, seeing as their sister station in Richmond is also a news-talker, just to prevent confusion from the casual listener, searching on Google for WRVA and seeing two news-talk results.

I also wonder, if this happens, would Bob the Blade be able to return? I have no clue what bridges he burned, if any, when he walked off the air on the old Rooster, but it'd be great to have him back in PM drive in the Triangle.

EDIT: I also was wondering, since Rush Radio just added Allan Handleman's weekend show, if this is another pseudo-hint at real classic rock returning to the Triangle soon?

What, no "Brown Eyed Girl" or "Ramblin' Man"? For shame! ???

The term "Classic Hits" can be difficult because of the more modern evolution of classic rock. Cox is doing this and clear channel is doing this as well.

Clear Channel has two types of classic hits:

1- Leans rock by playing the late 60s, 70s and 80s.
2- Leans pop by playing 60s, 70s and 80s pop/rock, pop, motown and disco.

Clear Channel has their classic rock station as well. Right now, classic rock on clear is very similar to the classic hits (rock leaning) format BUT your about to start seeing the classic rock format under clear channel leave the 60s and play little of the 70s while hitting hard with the 80s and even some 90s. Cox is already doing this with their classic rock station.

Confusing?? I honestly think I know what all these companies are following and that is Jones Media which provides formats to satellite stations. Go to Jones Media Group and check out their formats they have to offer. They have always defined classic hits in two different directions and their classic rock includes 70s 80s and 90s. Jethro Tull, Neil Young and even some of the Beatles will no longer be heard on classic rock stations. Instead, these artist will be played on the classic hit (rock leaning) formats.

Let me know if someone has a different opinion on this.

Pop-leaning classic hits (WOGL/Philadelphia, WCBS/NYC, KRTH/LA, KLUV/Dallas, and locally WKIX, WNCT, etc) is much more common than the rock leaning kind. Classic Hits was originally "lighter" classic rock like WSRV/Atlanta...but then the oldies stations all started calling themselves classic hits, and the main definition of the format kind of changed.

For example, WRQQ/Nashville calls themselves "Classic Hits 97-1 RQQ", and look at their playlist: http:/www.classichits971.com

I also saw a post on Kitty's Facebook that mentioned "By the way, The River is rockin' a lot harder lately - noticed?" I love what they've done so far.

Check out this CC classic hits "River" in Huntsville, AL: http://www.1003theriver.com

It used to sound like 100.7 The River does now (classic rock hits), but their recently played includes Bee Gees, Hollies, James Taylor, Billy Joel, Leo Sayer, and J. Geils Band. They are definitely pop classic hits these days, have been for a while.

Doubt they're partying at Highwoods, unless Don brought Bojangle's in for everyone. KIX 102.9 is owned by McClatchey -
they're located in a law building near North Hills.

WRVA is still a poorly imaged jukebox, but the classic rock angle is probably a smart move. I didn't know what they were before.
Maybe there's room for The Blade. I know he's tired of playing golf everyday. I'm tired of him taking my money.

Would Clear Channel re-hire Blade after his WRDU walk off? Granted he wasn't vulgar or anything in his rant/walk off, but still not sure if they'd want to re-hire him. Personally, I'd love to hear him back on the air, miss hearing him in the afternoon.

Blade walking off of WRDU's country format is exactly what a rock jock should do!

They'd be smart to get him, but that's not CCs MO.

With the way Clear Channel runs shit, if the River were to make a 100% classic rock flip, along with some rebranding, we'd more than likely have the entire Premiere Choice slate of jocks, except for mornings, which would end up being Bob & Tom or Lex & Terry.

I have found that the general public is very tuned into such sub format categories as "rock leaning classic hits" or "pop leaning classic hits". If I've heard it once, I've heard it a million times. The average everyday meter carrier really needs the station's stated format to fit the on air product or they simply will not listen. The3y better really really think about this before they get people listening with they're ears. For listeners, this stuff is the most important thing..

CC Classic hits (Pop), one of CC's biggest: WMJI/Cleveland. #2 cume station in the market. And often #1 P25-54 and P35-64.

#1 cuming station in CLE? Adult hits 106.5 WHLK/The Lake. www.1065thelake.com

Between WMJI and WHLK they account for over 50% of the market's cume. That's incredible!
