100.7 translator

I heard the translator on 100.7 playing christian music in Oak Park recently and I was amazed at the coverage of the station. How does the station cover in the loop downtown area? The guy who filed for this station must be a genius.

I'm in the Oak Lawn area and they bleed out WRXQ(Coal City) which was not a great signal in my area but usually listenable in the car.
Now when I'm in the car they are all I can pick up on 100.7. I know it has to do with the height of the tower but 2 watts that is amazing.
I was kind of curious about their COL, it is listed on radio-locator as Englewood, Illinois. The last time I checked Englewood was a part
of Chicago. How can they license a radio station to a neighborhood and not a city I've never seen that before.

The FCC doesn't require that a community be officially incorporated to be the city-of-license for a radio station. It appears that having defined geographic limits and people who believe it to be a community (for example, by naming their businesses after it) seems to be enough. Two stations are licensed to Fort Campbell, Kentucky - a military base, not an incorporated city - and they aren't the only stations licensed to military bases.

In any case the rules are a lot looser for translators. There are, for example, TV translators licensed to "Rural Iron County", Utah.

That translator severely whomps all over WRXQ. In the northeast portion of WRXQ's protected contour, you might not hear the translator itself, but you'll hear the snaps, pops and background hiss caused by it. Does it cause similar issues for the station in Racine?

How is it legal to do this? I noticed this when comparing the coverage maps on Radio-Locator. I remember a couple of years
back there was a pirate that was broadcasting from around 63RD and Kedzie(2 miles east of Midway Airport), they completely drowned
out WRXQ south to about 111TH and Kedzie in Chicago's Mount Greenwood area, which is in WRXQ'S protected coverage area. They
tracked them down and got them off the air, and a couple years later they hand out a license for someone else to do the same thing?
I understand one was a pirate using the F-BOMB every other word and did not apply for a license, but legal or not doesn't WRXQ'S
coverage area deserved to be protected?

Because trnaslators provide a "permissive" service only, I am wondering whether or not a 2 watter (at 1400 feet) might be permitted on 97.5 or 101.5 or 105.5 and licensed to Hyde Park?

Probably not 105.5 because of proximity to WLJE Valpo, but on 97.5, 99.1 or 101.5, I don't see why not. I haven't checked the distances/classes for WIIL and WVLI, but it might be possible to sneak a new 95.1 somewhere in Chicago.

95.1 could possibly be safe to have plaaced in Gary, but Chicago would push it due to strong coverage of WIIL up north. If it went in Chicago, it would need to be placed on the south side, and not on a downtown building to prevent interference. 105.5 is another one that would be pushing it. That frequency might have to go in the suburbs rather than downtown due to the proximity of WLJE, WZSR, and to a lesser extent WYKT. But 101.5, 99.1, and 97.5 probably would eventually be allowed if the 100.7 translator was allowed. But I think it would have worked better had the translator beein put up on the John Hancock instead, as it isn't interference free in downtown.

If I were WDCB, I'd plant a translator at 101.5 and WBEZ run a translator of the Chestertown station on one of the other frequencies.

I agree with you Dave when I was driving downtown, about 1/2 mile from the Sears Tower the station fades in and out, the only
time I got a clear signal is when I stopped to let someone run into a 7-11. As soon as I started moving again it faded in and out again.
I will be interested to see how it comes in on my Sony Walkman when summer comes and I start biking and walking on the lakefront
again.

I've noticed some reception issues with 100.7 (W264BF) while driving the concrete canyons of downtown Chicago, but reception clears up anywhere outside that area of taller buildings. W264BF was pretty clear out to Midway Airport the last time I checked.

Good point Philip, I was not thinking about it when I posted that but a lot of the full power stations tend to somewhat "scramble"
when your that close in proximity to the Sears or Hancock, and then go back to normal as soon as you get out of the immediate downtown
area. So I guess 2 watts would suffer a lot more. I actually never tried W264BF driving in the Midway area, but like I posted before they
still come in a few miles south of Midway.
