How long have they been classic rock? Anyone know a history of the station? Thanks!

I believe they began in 1985 as Classic Hits 100.7 and transitioned about a year later to Classic Rock. Previously, they were the Cat (WKKT), WHUE (beautiful music), WTTK (progressive country), and, I think, WCOP-FM (country at one point, oldies at another), owned by Plough. AT least, that's my memory.

once upon a time they were HUGE comptetitors with WBCN.Great Imaging wars. Now they are sister stations.I miss that kind of freshness in competition between them.

Since, I was in sales at the old 'HDH back then...: In-between the death of WHUE/11:59pm Dec 31,1984 and birth of WKKT/President's Day, 1985, there was a jockless 'WCOZ'. 100.7 was off air for a couple days from Jan.1/midnight to Jan.3/5pm as First Media took over from the Tangers. When it resumed on Jan.3rd it was 'WCOZ'. The "Cat" officially came on Feb.18,1985 and left on September 23 when Classic Rock debuted on 100.7. the 'ZLX calls didn't actually appear there until Oct.29,1985. They'll be celebrating 20 years of classic rock in the fall.

The Cat wasn't "Classic Hits",but more like harder AC targeting Reagan yuppies. True story : WYUP was one of the calls they considered applying for, but ended up with WKKT.

When I worked there it was Annalisa in mornings, Jeff Gonzer middays, Chuck Knowlin afternoons, Anne Cody at night, and Eddie Neal overnights.

John Shomby was the PD, Paul Lemieux the MD, and Mike Coleman the Creative Srvices guy.

It was owned by Cook Inlet Radio Partners, who I believe were an Alaskan co. And it might be the first major-market duopoly in the US because I believe when Infinity bought them, the new ownership rules had just passed.

Yea, I am pretty sure you're correct . FCC changed the 12-12 rules back in August of that year(1992), but they actually didn't take effect until September. Infinity-Cook Inlet deal was announced sometime in August.
Don't recall if they were the first because there was another radio
company(Jefferson-Pilot?) in the Denver area that snatched
ABC's AM-FM combo there around that same timeframe. Atlantic/ARS(WRKO/Mix)
bought us('HDH) a few days after the Infinity deal. So that was
the first AM duopoly in town. Steve Dodge also tried to buy out
Pyramid(Kiss AM-FM) around then but that deal died because of Richie's
big ego.

When they first started the classic rock format in 1985 it was
considered a "new" format, pretty revolutionary at the time.
That's when I knew I wasn't a kid anymore!

Wow, excellent memory. I do remember the brief period that they were WCOZ, now that you say it.
