101.1 FM Repton/Monroeville back on the air

WTID 101.1 (formerly WFNU, Repton) has returned to the air in mono, simulcasting country station WPGG 93.3 "The Power Pig" from Evergreen. 93.3 already puts an easily recieved stereo signal into all of Monroe County, but plans are in the works to move WPGG to Fort Walton Beach, FL after an ownership change. WHEN that happens (I'm guessing the deal is pretty much done), I don't know. So on the surface, 101.1 would seem to be the eventual 'replacement' for the Pig...but I know of no ownership change to WTID. Also, I'm not also sure that anyone actually works fulltime in the WTID studios just across the street from Piggly Wiggly and Sears--my new day job keeps me from 'spying' on the place ;D but I don't see the usual vehicles that'd normally be parked outside. The big red "Fun 101" satellite (actually the old tan 'WYNI' satellite with the faded NBC logo, covered with some custom made red sheath hiding it all) has been gone ever since the station went silent, and is still absent...a 'newer' black mesh satellite that I never really noticed before may have replaced it, located near the station's on-site antenna towards the rear of the building. In a nutshell: WTID 101.1, simulcasting another station broadcasting my least favorite type of music, and the originating station carries horrible syndicated shows like Bill O'Reilly and Paul Finebaum...and yet this simulcast is still 100% better than what the old Fun 101 put together. Weird.

Is WYNI-AM still on the air?
It's been on and off the air sporadically with southern gospel--now off. Coincidentally, there's a major change proposal to move it to a New Orleans suburb.

I was driving up I65 this afternoon and noticed that the station was back on. The top of the hour ID said WPGG WTID and I think WIJK-am. It was in stereo when I was listening and had a good signal when I started listening around the Atmore exit. Thats 40 to 50 miles away. Not bad for a class A station.

Thanks for answering the question about WYNI. I saw David Stewart from WMFC recently, and he indicated that his stations were going strong...I guess so, since there's no competition in town!

Take it from someone who lives in Monroeville--the way those stations were executed (literally and figuratively) on the air, WMFC AM/FM never had much to worry about. The listenership of 101.1 has probably doubled since the simulcast. I'll probably stick to my own R&B CD collection, though... :D
