101.1 Jack FM vs. 955 PLJ

Of course, WPLJ is sounding a lot like a Variety Hits station. Which do you like better? I actually think WPLJ has more variety than Jack. There is too much rock on Jack. PLJ has more variety, even though they seem all over the road. Also, there are jocks on PLJ. Which station do you like better?
______________

Personally, after losing CBS-FM, I listened to JACK, and then, out of curiosity, listened to 'PLJ. I liked PLJ better for a few reasons. They are:

1. WPLJ has live personalities.
2. I can get traffic, news, and weather on PLJ.
3. PLJ does not have the in-your-face announcer. I can't stand him!
4. Music is definitely less rock-oriented on 95-5.

WPLJ has all the advantages, in my opinion, except the official "Jack" name. The music sounds like a "Variety Hits" format, definitely.

So, let's go PLJ---Beat up JACK in the name of real radio!!

For a person (like myself) in their middle 30s, 'PLJ might as well call themselves "Ennui-FM" for the mind-numbing music they ordinarily play! Supposedly the Jack stations appeal most to those in their thirties while 'PLJ, presumably, targets the over 40 female niche.

is this even a question...please...WPLJ is alot better...in every way...DJs, jingles, music?!? and to the comment down below, I think you are way off with your over with the over 40 niche. There are plenty of people I know younger then that that love the station.

Hey what a coincedence. I can make a request on plj to be played, win stuff, find out traffic, weather and top news and get an occation joke from a dj, hmm who's got my vote? Live, Local, the way radio should be. anybody got 100 million to spare? I'd make my own independent radio station live 24/7/365... I wish. I think I need to quit dreaming LOL

WPLJ has Scott & Todd in the morning, and live DJs around the clock. Jack is automated with no sign of human intelligence in the studio. If I wanted that, I'd listen to satellite radio.

The 40 niche comment was way off. There are lots of people younger and older that listen to PLJ. My 55 (soon to be 56) year old aunt listens.
______________

Does the Jack name even have that big of an advantage over PLJ, a well-established moniker unto itself? There are people out here in the Chicago area who've heard of 95-5 PLJ.

PLJ is a heritage station. The only reason Jack will do well in the first book or two is because of listener curiosity. I hope Jack doesn't beat PLJ, because PLJ is an excellent station. Way better than Jack. PLJ isn't a jerk like Jack.

Radiolover78:

Personality radio stations have a connection with their audience. Whether it's a William B. Williams, Cousin Brucie, Frankie Crocker, Scott Muni, Scott Shannon or Funk Master Flex (I've tried to cover every format) even the average radio listener can relate in some way to one of their favorite radio DJs.

And yes, Jack-FM may see their highest listenership in its first book due to sampling. But where their ratings go after that remains to be seen.

I'll also agree. When I am listening to over-the-air radio, I do tune to PLJ a lot, and I'm a 20 year old male. I've been listening more ever since 92.7 'LIR and K-Rock went off the air. I don't like *everything* they play, but they play more of what I like than probably any other NYC station.

Who cares about all that junk,Id rather just hear music!
Actually tune to Jack instead of my sattelite radio (sometimes).
PLJ was great in the 80s,they should PERMANENTLY flush the format and it would be the greatest station on the dial.Right now PLJ plays too much "women music"
for me to listen to it,they play a good song then I have to turn it off, just like BLINK 102.7 did.It has a playlst rollercoaster I feel like Im coming off speed musically. You rock out then they play some dumb crap like Dido--Thank You.BOOOOORING-
Jack is like a cd player. They need to bring back WABC musicradio 77 except this time on FM!
Edited by artynj on 06/24/05 10:02 PM.
