101.1 WCBS-FM question

Do you think that WCBS-FM will bring back the full service element that it had in the original oldies format with the DJ's occasionally letting New Yorkers know what is going on with the news and mentioning sports scores and newscasts by news anchors in the afternoon, evenings and weekends? I know that the DJ are constantly updating us on the weather.

Vague Thread -- Please Be More Specific

If people want news they can tune to 1010 WINS, WCBS-880 or Bloomberg Radio 11-3-0. If people want sports scores they can tune to SportsRadio 66/WFAN or 1050 ESPN.

Ever heard of "Deregulation", Julius?

Julius usually drives me nuts with his admonitions to 'call/write a station, demanding that they change something he doesn't like,' but in this case, I agree with him. I don't think 'full service' radio is obsolete yet. I enjoy a TOH news update; it doesn't have to be 10 minutes, 2-3 minutes of headlines is more than sufficient. If something I hear piques my interest, I can then switch to WINS, WCBS, or KYW in the southern areas.

What's wrong with that?

hmmmmmmmm Why would a station not want to do something that might make you switch the station you are listening to ? I wonder.

CBS Radio also owns 880 WCBS AM 1010 WINS and 660 WFAN. Listeners will most liky go to these othe CBS stadions for news and sports with Bloomberg 1130 and ESPN 1050 radio not being big factors in New York radio.

With so many stations available vs. the time in history when full service radio existed, folks look to each station to satisfy one need best. If they want news, they know where to go. If they want music, they generally do not want it interrupted by news.

David, I am not trying to be sarcastic here, I am just asking a question: With that line of thinking do you see where we will see different variations of "JACK" formats if people who are listening to music stations don't want their music interruped by time, temp, news etc? Ie: JACK for 80's music, "ELTON" for 70's music, "BOSS" for 90's music, and so on? The stations will either be voicetracked or jockless. Do you see that day coming?

Why chase your listeners away? I think that given the target audience, brief newscasts, sports score updates, and of course traffic and weather would be extremely appropriate within the confines of the format. There are a lot of people who want this basic information and if it's given bfiefly and concisely it would help increase TSL.

That was possible in a day and age when you didn't have 70 other "choices" in the market from
which to choose.

Now, in some smaller towns, you do see FM music stations doing local news in the afternoon.

And sure, depending on format, one can argue all day about time checks, or no time checks. Weather, etc.

But every station being "full service" with news at the top and bottom of the hour, sports at :20 and :40 and weather 3 times an hour is simply not practical, nor workable in major markets. That's why AM died, remember?

Interestingly, I should point out that CBS is not doing TOH news at 5 PM or 6 PM, like old CBS-FM listeners have been accustomed to hearing.

Being topical doesn't have to mean stopping everything for 5 or ten minutes for a formal newscast or sportscast anymore than having a contest means you break format and do a 1/2 hour game show. Being topical on a music station can mean the air personality mentions local events, scores, news items, psa's, birthdays, or whatever in short bits say during a seque or at the beginning of a stop set. Its called relating to the audience while keeping the music going.

This somthing good top 40 stations and djs excel(or excelled) at--short, sweet, to the point, topical and local. KFRC San Francisco was always a good example of this as I'm sure many NYC and East Coast stations were.
