101.3 rebrands

It looks like 101.3 has dropped the name "Cindy" and is now calling itself "Sunny 101.3". It is still an AC Gold format. I wonder what is behind this move?

It was kind of an odd brand to start with. Maybe they are trying to broaden the potential audience?

The web stream isn't working, but the social media channels and their website still shows "Cindy".

Is the music mostly the same as before?

Wasn't really surprised, especially after Cindy Marie, who did the VO's (and the namesake) left to Las Vegas....kinda listened to it less over the last year after they tightened things up a bit, probably in response to iHeart launching the Breeze there. Interesting that KRKE's stream is down, just checked sister KOAZ and it works... Don't believe the Vanguard stations has formal sites anymore, only links to their stream and social media.

Yeah they are still playing mostly 80s pop along with some hits from the last 20 years or so. Right now they mostly have jingles with just 101.3 with any mention of Cindy cut out. They may in some kind of transition period until they get new imaging or a new logo to show on social media.

Yeah, I think Vanguard is mainly just using their Facebook pages for the radio stations. Often will hear references to KOAZ's Facebook page on the air.

101.3 is a cursed frequency in Albuquerque. It has been a million different formats over the last 20 years, all of which have failed miserably. Nobody can seem to get it right. They would probably be better off trying classic country, they do have a better signal than 98.1. "The Range" used to be on 101.3, so people might remember it. Or they could simulcast The Oasis on it or they could just turn the transmitter off. I don't know what they are trying to accomplish with the present format.

I don't know if any station is really "cursed" but since it is a class A facility it has been treated like an inferior signal by previous owners. If it looked like something had potential it would be moved to a "better" signal which was often 105.1 another station that has a history of frequent changes. Of course everything that was moved there would soon die off. The exception might be La Jefa which started at 101.3 then had the longest run on 105.1 but then was dropped back to 101.3 then to 102.9 where it ended a few months later. But now 101.3 is no longer under the same roof as 105.1. Then there is also the issue of too many stations and only a few formats that commercial radio can do.

Nash Icon had a much better signal than 98.1 and yet they were often still beaten by The Bull. Moving The Oasis to 101.3 or 106.3 might allow them to send the signal to the Santa Fe translator from there instead of the Grants station. However they just purchased KSFE 96.7 for $375,000. I'm surprised that station was worth that much! 101.3 went for 250k and it covers a much larger population. 101.3 sounds more like KABG with a few 21st century hits mixed in. The music sounds really upbeat to be called "relaxing". It also runs without personalities as does 100.9 but that concept never does well in the ratings. Even KDRF which established itself as a "no DJs" station doesn't have very impressive numbers either though they still do alright. Nearly all the commercial market here is controlled by three companies. So these guys are outsiders. The Oasis can deliver an audience that no other station has but the other two try to go up against the big corporate owned stations with bigger budgets and professional programmers. But could another niche format work alongside The Oasis?

Now all 3 Vanguard stations' Facebook pages has gone dark, and Tony Wise (KOAZ afternoons)' FB page have removed any mentioned of KOAZ and is now "Tony Wise, NM Smooth Jazz".. but his latest post states the station/air shift is not changing, but he can't use the Oasis name anymore. KOAZ's stream is still up though.

He can't use the Oasis name? This might not be good news for the future of 103.7. God forbid they flip formats. Unless 103.7 goes Soft AC and 101.3 goes to The Oasis...
