101-5 CIL Carbondale/Kato Exits

All Access reporting that morning drive co-host Kato has left the building. Lia Mira is still doing mornings with Jon E. Quest filling in for the time being. Anyone have any info on why Kato's gone...again?

Kato was not happy. He chose to leave. That's all that needs to be said here or anywhere else.I know more, being a friend of his, but it's not a matter of public concern.Best of luck to Kato in his future endeavors.

What has happened to this radio station? I know that Kato left for some reason about not being happy or whatever. I've listened for the past couple months, and they sound horrible. In mornings during the day and at night. Not sure what happened to the LEGENDARY WCIL but it sounds to me like the station has no direction at all, and that whoever is programming it needs to go back to broadcast college. Jonny Quest in the morning??? That guy shouldn't even be on the air. Sounds like Zimmer radio is just being cheap. I've been doing radio in Paducah for many years. I know it's a small town, but thats just my opinion. I have always respected wcil, so lets get it going strong again because I think it's in trouble.Brandon

I think that Electric is adult top 40. I do agree that wcil has went down hill since steve and dc and then kato left. Sounds to me like they were carrying the radio station. Nothing personal, but I agree CIL needs a serious overhall..music staff and all.

I believe Kato is gone because of the same personal issues that have caused him difficulties in major markets in the past...that and a mixture of other things from what I hear. [EDIT] His reputation proceeds him everywhere he goes. He's probably doing his dissappearing act right now. A shame, really...talented jock. All he did on the CIL morning show for the short time he was there was give the weather and time. It all sounded very structured and I wouldn't say that he carried that station, by any means. He wasn't even there long enough to leave a lasting impression. I don't think any listeners are having Kato withdrawls, let's put it like that. The station doesn't sound bad. Sure, there's always room for improvement, but I've heard tapes of the old CIL that everyone raves about and I really don't see what the big deal was. John Riley was it. Other than his good morning show, that's wasn't exactly what I would call a flame-throwing CHR. You probably can't pick it up because you're so far away..but if you're going to critique a CHR, try Kiss-FM in Marion. Since their MD left, they are all over the road and most of their jocks leave a lot to be desired. Just my opinoin. Nobody's perfect. [EDIT*=inflamatory, possible slander]

Hey, I don't even know this guy, but If you say he has issues then so be it. All I did was state my opinion that the station really needs a tuneup, and that steve and dc, plus kato made wcil sound better. Didn't mean to offend anyone. sorry.

Brandon/Justin, Is Electric CHR or Hot AC today? Never burn your bridges you may need them in this business. Good Luck
I'm sorry, what other markets have you been in, Jon? It's Paducah, Kentucky... WDDJ can move in any direction it wants to, as the tide of music warrants. As long as they're keeping their advertisers happy, what does the word "format" really mean in an unrated market? While perhaps not written in the best of ways, I believe the poster made a valid point. The radio station does not sound near as good as it once did, nor -- at the moment -- does it show any signs of moving back in the right direction.Let me ask you these questions:A) Have you finally started wearing headphones again when you're doing a break? I mean, I'd hope you have, since you're in mornings now..B) Have you finally remembered what a "post" is and you've finally stopped walking all over the first 3-5 seconds of songs?C) Have you finally started actually doing some PREP for your show again? Or does it still sound like you're opening up the mic and flying completely by the seat of your pants, which is probably a big reason why the problem mentioned in B) above is occuring?D) Have you guys finally dumped that annoying voiceover "talent" that you were using for the past year or so? If you want my advice, go back to Brian James or if you want the filtered sound, invest in somebody like "bc" who can do it well and sound at least somewhat natural.E) How's that voicetracked midday going for you guys? Is there any effort being put into it, or is Chad Elliott doing very basic "THM, 101.5 CIL-FM... It's Chad Elliott and the At-Work Network with (insert artist / title here)," and then retreating to his office for the rest of the day?F) Is anyone in your building bothering to aircheck ANY of your younger talents? Or, are they all being left to fend for their own with zero guidance, thus sounding like the fresh off the street individuals that they are?G) Are songs still being put into Scott Studios with incorrect or even unmarked intro times?H) Are songs still being put into Scott Studios with severely inconsistent levels, which I'm sure your processing just LOVES to have to deal with?I) Does the 'Fire Next' button on the control board still stick constantly, making for some very awkward segues from the talent's perspective? Oh, I'm sorry... Heaven forbid anyone in the building on Country Aire Drive actually KNOW how to RUN A BOARD!J) Are you still running a jingle package that sounds seriously subpar when it's being sung in contradiction with the on-air positioning statement(s) being used by your jocks and voiceover "talent?" I mean, don't get me wrong, "KIIS-FM Los Angeles 2004" from ReelWorld is a great package, but you sound asinine as a radio station when the jingles are all sung as "C-I-L!" and the rest of the on-air presentation is saying "CIL-FM."K) Do your jocks still manage to talk completely through a 90-second remote bed and then most of the way through another, usually poorly matched to the beat of the original, music bed? Do you not realize that, with a remote break, most of your audience tunes away after about the first :20, IF that? Imagine how much of that audience has tuned away after a good 2:20 or so?L) Are you still lagging behind the premiere CHRs in the country, when it comes to new music? Are you still banging recurrents that most of those same premeire radio stations either aren't playing at all anymore or are barely playing ten times per week?M) Is WCIL-FM still getting its BDS monitoring illegally via a phone line connection to St. Louis? The list could go on and on and on and on, but I think you get the point. WCIL-FM needs A LOT of work before ANYONE associated with the radio station can run their mouth on a messageboard asking an employee of another radio station "Is Station X Format A or B today?"

Aaron, I am not saying this stationis perfect, every station has issues and we could all critique each one to death, look at VZA before you got there, We would love to have all of the tools to make a perfect radio station with a staff of 3 it's not easy. There is alot to be said for being at the same station in the same market for 17 years, and being on the air with kids the entire time that they are in school. Sure I could have gone to other markets, but I like it here and I like the station, you are very open to critique our station but when VZA let you go this was the first place you came for a job, and we hired you, because we are fairly nice people here. I figured that you needed a place between jobs to work and stay fresh, this after people warned us about you. You are a very good talent, but people skill wise you have none, away from the microphone and you just annoy the crap out of people. We let you use our internet 24 hours a day to shop for a job, So once again I say watch what bridges you burn because you never know when you will need them again and where someone will land. Good luck at your new job and I wish the best for you, Now I am done with this topic, this is why I never visit these boards it makes me feel like one of those "I have no life outside of radio people"

I’ve been informed by a couple of people that the topic of conversation on this board has been about me. People have been saying some very interesting things on here, and I just wanted to clear everything up. Sure I admit I have had some “issues” in other markets in which I am not proud of, but that was NOT the case at CIL-FM. I chose to leave for other personal reasons that I do not wish to discuss. That is basically all I wanted to say. I don’t want to slam, or trash anyone, or any radio station. I feel that is all that people want to do on these message boards, which is why I rarely read anything on here.…ALSO, some of the “phone bits” I’ve heard on the station recently sound VERY familiar..only without my voice. Great editing!P.S…The time is 7:41pm…and the temperature is 86 degrees..

I am not saying this stationis perfect...Great, because it is far from it.We would love to have all of the tools to make a perfect radio station with a staff of 3 it's not easy.Well, let's see... You have a control board (with one button that does, occasionally, stick.. but it otherwise performs with little problem), two (three?) rather nice production rooms, microphones, a decent automation system in Scott Studios, an imaging library, at least eight jocks (including part-timers), a transmitter... I fail to see what tools you don't have?? To say that "it's not easy" is a cop-out, Jon. It's not SUPPOSED to be easy. That is what separates those of us who achieve our goals from those who sit and complain that "we would love to have all the tools..." when challenged on issues with the radio station. Those who achieve, put 110% effort into it. In other reasons, the only reason WCIL-FM is not a "perfect radio station" is that the effort is not being made by those in positions to lead others. There is alot to be said for being at the same station in the same market for 17 years...Really? That's funny, Jon, because I lived in Carbondale in the early-mid 90s, listened to WCIL-FM all the time and have zero recollection of you.Sure I could have gone to other markets, but I like it here...Because they let you get away with being lazy.when VZA let you go this was the first place you came for a job, and we hired you, because we are fairly nice people here. I figured that you needed a place between jobs to work and stay fresh...A) I didn't come to you first. I made contact with those that mentor me and attempted to land something with their stations. But, with them having nothing open, I took KATO up on HIS offer to come on the air with him the night after I was let go to have a little fun. B) YOU had nothing to do with my hiring. In fact, the word I've heard is that you went crying to Chad Elliott that you were intimidated by me and didn't want me working there. Again, KATO went to bat for me and talked Chad into bringing me aboard. C) I didn't NEED WCIL-FM to "work and stay fresh." Need I remind you about a little 100,000 watt radio station to the North/Northwest referred to by our friends at the FCC as KSLZ? If anything, I wasted time -- and money -- by staying in Southern Illinois in the belief that WCIL-FM might have an opportunity for me, with Kato moving to mornings with Lia Mira and the resulting staff shifting. You are a very good talent...Well, I appreciate that you recognize that.you just annoy the crap out of people...Why, because I put my full effort into my radio station, whatever it happens to be at the time? Because I am a radio person and know what good radio should sound like and strive to see others realize those potentials? So once again I say watch what bridges you burn because you never know when you will need them again and where someone will land.Wait a minute, I need to find a paper towel to dry up the Pepsi I just spit all over my desk.... Okay, there we go. Jon, the day that I ever come to YOU for ANY kind of reference is the day that I will hang up my headphones and move forward with my "other" career goal, teaching and coaching high school basketball. Barring a return to CC in the market for a first PD job or something (and I don't see that happening, mainly because I respect both PDs in Marion and have every reason to believe that they will be in their positions for quite some time to come, if they choose to be), Southern Illinois has nothing that it can offer me. Thank you, though, for the attempted words of wisdom.Good luck at your new job and I wish the best for you...What's this? Civility? Wow.Now I am done with this topic...Doubt it, you'll post again because you know every word of what I've said is true and you'll want to deny the truth.this is why I never visit these boards it makes me feel like one of those "I have no life outside of radio people"If you "never visit these boards," then how is it you came to be one of the responses in this thread? Run along, Jonny... I hear there's some kind of convention next week for video/tanning store owners that you need to prepare to take time away from your morning show for...

I also find it funny how Jonny has tried to leave on several occasions in the last year or so, I know first hand because I've been up against him for the jobs he's gone after, yet he is STILL in SO ILL. I've heard of some of the things that are being said about Kato by people who are in the building at River Radio, and to be honest I think that it's kind of sad to see so called "PROFESSIONALS" slamming someone and taking personal pot-shots at former employees. I'd still like to see someone from RR come out and admit that Kato left on his own accord rather than hiding behind the curtain of him getting fired, which is not the case. You're right Johnny, don't burn bridges in this business, but it works both ways you might want to remind you're employees of that fact. Ivy, you can try to hide behind you're anonymous screen name but eventually someone will be able to pick you out, like me. You're personal vendetta against Kato may be well warrented, but keep it at that...personal and to yourself. There's no need to air out your personal opinons about Kato. Practice what your brother preaches about not burning bridges...it is good advice.

I listened to wcil on Monday July 3rd around 9am. Jonny Quest did a break over Nelly Furtado “Promiscuous”. He talked and talked and talked some more. One problem…THAT SONG HAS NOOOO INTRO!!!!! And He’s the morning show????..”The face of the radio station”. Oh my god, does the word “POST” even register his mind. It sounded horrendous, and I can’t believe why wcil put him on the most important daypart on the station.. Learn this word Jonny…..POST! Study it, learn what it means, practice it, and at least SOUND like you have been in radio for “17 years”

HA HA HA HA. I’m so glad that I stumbled on to this board. It’s about time someone speaks up, and let the truth be known about CIL, plus Chad and John. Sounds like nothing has changed over the years. One word guys..PAYOLA! Karma is a bitch, and I’m sure you will find that out VERY soon. I will now say goodbye to you two geniuses. One more thing JOHN..you are right . DO NOT BURN BRIDGES. Think about it.

Peace
