101.5 Jamz and KZZP 104.7

I was just in the Phoenix area a few days ago and I was listening to 101.5 and 104.7. I had a serious problem with both stations. When you tune into one station and they are playing a song, then you switch to another, the other station is playing the exact same song five minutes later. This happened quite a bit to the point where I just turned off the radio.

What type of "competition" is this!!! I don't want to hear the exact same song that I just heard five minutes ago on another station. What's up with that? Please don't say that people want to hear there "favorite" song, there are IPODS for that!!! I realize it is CHR radio, but the repetition is ridiculous on both stations. There isn't anything really that separates 101.5 from 104.7. Isn't that what competition is supposed to be about? Maybe I am just being naive.

I'd be curious to know exactly where you are from. You could take a handful of cities and tune into the CHR station there and find that aside from a couple of songs and the mixshows on the weekends, they too sound alike (B96 in Chicago has just as tight a playlist). It is not exclusive to the Phoenix market, nor KZON/KZZP. Perhaps you just noticed how alike they were because our market happens to have 2 Top 40/pop stations that lean rhythmic. However, we also have KKFR, and KMVA, which don't sound identical to each other, nor to KZON and KZZP.

Hamp,

SLICK & SLIGHT!!!!!!

SLICK & SLIGHT I tell ya!!

I'll say more soon, but later. By the way, have you listened to 97.5? You will REALLY love them!

Although 104.7 has a wider playlist, I must say that I enjoy 101.5 the most. They cause me not to flip during a time when I really should be flipping around and taking advantage of what the dial has to offer NOW. Even in Los Angeles, I flip a lot. There's something about KZON that gets me....

Well the number one song is the number one song. Any station can play the number one song, but "what competition is supposed to be about" is the stuff they put around the song.

The radio landscape is littered with failed radio stations who figured it was enough to play the number one song. The stations that thread the proverbial eye of the needle are the ones that play that number one song but surround it with interesting stuff in between the records.

If there is a battle going on between these two stations, it isn't over the music.

Actually, I used to live in Chicago and have listened to B-96 and KISS 103.5 (b-96 a little more) and no when I would switch off, I wouldn't hear the exact same song five minutes later on the opposite station. I don't disagree that CHR's have tight playlists, but to the point that the competing stations are playing the songs not even five minutes apart from one another, that's a little much. I am not saying 101.5 Jamz and 104.7 KZZP aren't good stations, but you may as well only listen to one of them since you are going to hear the same thing on both. Also, the major difference with B-96 in Chicago than with a lot of CHR's, B-96 has commerical-free hours, which actually caused me to listen to them more. 101.5 Jamz and 104.7 as far as I know don't offer that.
As far as KKFR 98.3 is concerned, I am surprised it is still on the air considering the signal isn't what it used to be. I couldn't even get it in my hotel room, nor KMVA 97.5.
Oh, just to let you know, I live in a market where there is only ONE CHR and it leans more mainstream, not rhythmic. Used to live in the valley and I am moving back ASAP.

Fair enough.

Power 98.3 still has relevance in that it doesn't get play as much "pop" as Jamz - there are some people who care about that. You're not going to hear much of Lady Gaga, Katy Perry or Ke$ha on Power (unless they're in concert and want to give away tickets).

You forgot about 90.7 KVIT in the East Valley. They probably play the most variety, including Radio Disney-friendly pre-teen pop to "pop alternative" and safe hip-hop (which makes sense, since their DJ's and target audience are teens).

But Power still has a crappy signal though.

Sure, their signal has issues in Ahwatukee, Tempe, and parts of Scottsdale. But, there are places in town where it comes in loud and clear. If one can hear it, they'll set a preset in the car if they like it.

Somewhat True, However, I am in my 30s, and my mixes on the station are 90% Party Dance Music. I even have a House show, and I've been mixing all weekend Long for Memorial Day. Tune in until 5pm today to catch it!
