Well, I don't know what's going on, but I've noticed that 101.5 JamZ (along with quite a few other chr rhythmic stations, like WBBM, KGGI, WBTS, KIIS...) has backed off quite a bit from the current hip hop and went more r&b/pop outside of mix shows (or even went more in a top 40 direction all together).
I'm not complaining because I have to admit I love JamZ and lately I've once again been on JamZ all day for the past few days since Jan. 1. I like how it is now, but I can't help but to wonder if this will help or hurt ratings? I noticed many similar stations across the U.S. make some similar changes as well and logically came to the conclusion that there must be a good reason behind it or else many people wouldn't be jumping on this trend, but I'm just hoping... Even with the many similarities between JamZ and a few other stations, I do see more of a bigger difference now between JamZ and others, especially with KZZP going a bit more towards a top 40 direction, playing Taylor Swift, All American Rejects, The Veronica's, The Fray...etc. So hopefully this is a benefit for JamZ in 2009.
I'm glad that JamZ has managed to "find" more of it's own sound now, and I'm very content with the fact that they are playing less of what they used too and started playing more "hit-like" music. I have no regrets with the signs of hip hop popularity declining or fading away finally showing a bit more, however, I do like how quality lyrics, creativity, and rhyming are beginning to make it's way back into many of the new hip hop releases that do manage to top the charts these days. I also love to see people crossing over into other genres as well. Very excited about a lot of the new rhythmic r&b/pop releases that are on the way this year as well...
I also have to say that the new morning show OVERALL is pretty decent. It may be no Kid & Ruben, but the team they've put together are pretty decent, along with the rest of the people they have throughout the day. There could be some minor improvements, but overall things are sounding pretty good to me. If they could add "day 'n' nite" by Kid Cudi like all (many) of the other stations across the U.S. did, that would be good as well.
