101.5 shifting to the 90s?

I've noticed recently in the Point's imaging no reference to the late 70s in the "and more" description.

I also heard a promo featuring a hook from "Semi-Charmed Life", a song from 1997.

Is the Point skewing more towards 90s music? To me it's only logical since you can only get so much life out of 250 songs from the 80s. Plus Cox can keep calling it "THE NEW!" 101.5 the Point for a few more years.

I heard the same thing the other day, got me off guard. Hey, if they make a push for 90's music then im all for that. I wouldn't mind hearing a few good 90's songs. I wish they would stop with "THE NEW 101.5 The Point". They do the same with 107.3 and 97.1.

It seems they would move towards more of a "gold-based Hot AC", which is gonna put them in between a rock and a hard place, with Mix and Q105. Time to get Tampa Bay "Movin'"?

Its been done before. Worked for a little while. Remember Star on 95.7. Great sound and fun mix of music. But the listeners are not there. Not saying it cant be done. Just have to be a little more open that the usual 200 songs over and over.

If anything they would be more of a Jack with the variety they are going for. Good Luck what ever they do. With Mix, The Eagle and Q there is not a lot of room there.

I've also heard a snippet from Sheryl Crow's "If It Makes You Happy" (1996) in one of their promos but haven't yet heard the actual song on the station.

Even when they touted themselves as "The best of the '80s and more from the late '70s and early '90s", the only songs that they really play(ed) from the '90s are "Two Princes" from the Spin Doctors and "Unbelievable" from EMF.

Their ratings are apparently up (even with the same songs over and over), so I'm not quite sure why they would make a format change now. I wouldn't mind it, though.

Anyone remember "Coast" 107.3? Started out as Seventies, then started adding 80s, and by 1999, the format was flipped.

I think these Cox "decade" stations are an example of planned obsolescence -- they target a given demo (thirtysomethings), expand in their later years to stay in-demo as listeners age out, then finally the concept becomes untenable and the station is blown up. In a couple of years, the Point will be blown up to become something else. Even if its 25-54 stays steady, the cohort is moving out of the demo.

No amount of shame stops Cox from taking a rusted-out radio station, sanding it down, painting it up, and calling it new.

Yeah, but Coast 107.3 sounded great, even though it leaned too much (for my tastes) on Elton John, Rod Stewart and (ugh) Jimmy Buffet. They had good personalities (and great, too. Scotty: RIP), The Saturday Night Dance Party from 7pm-5am (!) and the year-specific Sundays. It was good stuff.

101-5 has just two jocks. 2. Dos. Corey in the morning (not a very friendly person in real life, from what I hear) and Jeff (Nick, you're not fooling anyone) in the afternoon. No mid-day jock for even a fake request hour during lunch. No night-time jock. Nobody on the weekends. The station still sounds fun, but I think the playlist needs to be a little wider and there needs to be at least one more jock.

Yeah but they weren't allowed to say anything except what was on the liner cards.

if this is maps marino?? what are you doing these days?

Enjoying the cool crisp Tennessee mountain air, my friend. I moved up here from Florida back in 2004. I did radio up here for awhile but then decided to make a career change and "follow the money" as they say.

Thanks for remembering!
