101.5 The Point very limited on their music?

Hi there, this is my 1st post! I'm a HUGE music fanatic as well as an ex club DJ (13 years). I've been reading these message boards for quite some time now. Enough of the introductions :p...

I've been a semi-fan of The Point since they went on the air, and would like to make an observation that I've noticed. It seems to me that they are so, so limited on their music library. With so much 80's and 90's music out there to choose from, my observation is they are "close minded" on what they play and don't play. Am I the only one who hears this? Look at any Billboard or Radio and Records chart from that era (at least the top 15) and compare.

I listen to other 80's-type radio stations online, and it seems to me that not many new songs are added to The Point's playlist, especially with so many Pop songs which charted during both decades. Day after day, it seems to be the same 300 songs in different order. I can give examples, if needed. Comments?

I hope to be contributing regularly to this board. Thanks!

The songs they play are "tested" and "safe".

Jeff in Sa-ra-so-ta!

I've listened to the "Point" for a few years also. Your are correct, there is a TON of music from the '80's and '90's that do NOT get air time. "Muzak" has a time a place, but not at work, or with the kids, or hagnigin out back by the pool. "XM's" "First Wave," and the "80's on 8" put the "Point" to shame. "Tested," and "safe," are being kind.

Does 101.5 play any Michael Jackson at all? I know they didn't touch a lot of his songs, and I don't know if his death changed that.

Not that I can tell

I have heard the same song twice in the same day for days at a time! They edit song of the intro's of the songs. I asked Nick Sanders once when I worked there. His reply to that was the songs were tested and that is what they agreed on!

Nick Sanders - is he still one of only two airstaff (Corey Dylan) on that station with nine-hour airshifts? Again, forgive me, it's been awhile since I tuned in...

Meanwhile, there is a thread on the Houston board that sister station "106.9 The Point's" days could be numbered... :-\

Joe Elliot holds the other nine hour shift.

I worked for Nick Sanders (part-time) when he was PD at Coast 107.3. When Coast flipped, he moved over to 101.5 when it changed formats and became The Point. He's been gone from there for quite some time.

If the Point flipped, what could it do. There are huge holes on the FM band like classic country, classical, adult standards, jazz, sports, and talk and I'm sure lots of other stuff. Any ideas? It's Cox, so I presume it would be done with little or no human interaction.

I agree. 101.5 The Point needs to broaden up their playlist, even after they have added 90's.

I think a station that resembles the old "Power Pig" would work. 93.3FLZ's "Rewind Sundays" gets a little too busy in the mix, but I still like it, since it's only on for a few hours.

If I ever heard The Point play ANY of these songs, I think I'd have a heart attack:
Time (Clock of the Heart), Overkill, Jump (For My Love), On Our Own (Bobby Brown), Love Somebody, Breakin'...There's No Stopping Us, I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down, Don't Talk To Strangers, The Rain, Dirty Diana, Batdance, Love Touch, Dare Me, Some Kind Of Lover, Gloria, Shattered Dreams, Mercedes Boy, Control, Xanadu, Hip To Be Square, Chains Of Love, '65 Love Affair, Loverboy (Billy Ocean), Lovergirl (Teena Marie), It's No Crime, Casanova, yada yada yada...

I guess they have to stay "safe", which means we get to hear the same songs over and over (or not at all)...

I hadn't even mentioned any 90's tunes ::)

The Dove plays more stuff with a wider spectrum of artists.

The Point is a very retro/old wave/brit pop station for the 80's (Romantics, Men at Work, Human League, Duran Duran) and now what would be considered an adult alternative rock station for the 90's (Kravitz, Gin Blossoms, Alanis, Matchbox 20). They're not rhythmic at all. You'll hear very little dance and or pop tunes from the era they're covering. Let me know when you hear something from Abdul, Watley, Cover Girls or Stevie B. The only "rhythmic artist (if you even want to call him that) you ever hear is maybe Prince. I also believe that if they opened up their playlist a bit, it would be better. However, I believe they've got that single station positioned so it doesn't overlap with almost every other station in the group. Think about what each one focuses on and you'll see what I mean.

94.9: Adult Contemporary from the 80's, 90's, and 00's without the EZ favorites and without anything retro or alternative.
105.5: Adult Contemporary from the 70's, 80's, 90's, and 00's and playing the EZ favorites without anything retro or alternative.
97.1: Almost exclusively new rock. Not dipping into the 90's anymore.
102.5: Hard Rock from the 80's and 90's but not playing artists that overlap with The Point.
107.3: Rock Hits from the 70's and 80's with very few artists that overlap with The Point.

How much of those nine-hour airshifts are actually voicetracked? I can't imagine DJ's sitting in that studio all day long listening to the same old songs over and over again. (Then again, I've never done it myself)

On another note, I haven't heard too many '90s songs since they officially declared themselves as an '80s and '90s station. As others have said, there are many, many songs to play from that decade that could really mix up the playlist nicely.

I have no real idea, but I presume that they are live from 6-10 AM and 3-7PM based on the times they claim they are taking calls from contestants.

Don't worry.. you'll probably hear it again tomorrow.....
