101.5

It might be a recent thing, but it seems like 101.5 plays Loverboy's "Turn Me Loose" every Friday afternoon right before 5 pm, I guess as a way of saying it's time for people to be turned loose for the weekend. Do any other stations you know of play a song at a specific time and day anymore? Seems like something probably more common in the past.

Back in my PD days in Erie, PA. and elsewhere, I had songs that actually fit the mood and day. Rain, storms, winter, summer, days of the week, and so on. Too many to even mention; however, Sunday Morning Coming Down fits better on Sunday morning than on Thursday afternoon. Day-parting is a lost art, isn't it.

From whayt I've heard lately..the ability to do something other than following the playlist, or hitting "next event" or reading a liner card is a lost art..
TPAnx :'(

I think it has more to do with 101.5 not mixing up the playlist than intentional dayparting. I've heard plenty of songs played at one time one day, and then getting played again the next day within the same hour. That's what you get when you're playing the same 300 songs from the 80s (and more!) for more than five years now.

On my midday show on CTQ at 12noon on Fridays, I play a short version of Bang on the Drum with a bunch of tv/movie clips mixed in. Our afternoon girl Heidi plays Finally Friday by George Jones each Friday at 5pm.

I tend to agree with radiodork's point that The Point's short playlist tends to result in certain songs being heard more frequently. That tends to be the case during their 80 minute music mix during morning drive. However, I do notice that their sound does tend to become a bit edgier in afternoons/evenings; there is regular mix of songs heard then you won't hear during the early daypart.

Cox's 107.3 and 101.5 pretty much repeat their music about eight or so hours apart. As far as specific tunes at specific times, you ll hear q 105 run through the same schtick every friday afternoon at 5...friday on my mind, working for the weekend, couple days off.....same ol, same ol...

My old station was big on that. Every morning at 6 a.m. we'd play "Put Some Drive In Your Country" by Travis Tritt. Every Friday at 5pm, I'd play "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere" by Buffett/Chesney.

I think in moderate doses, it's a nice subtle way to get a message out to your loyal listeners. However, it can get old real fast.

(And I think 101.5's issue is probably more or less bad music scheduling. I heard Depeche Mode's "People Are People" every afternoon at 3:40 for about two weeks. Good song, but it gets old when I drive into work every afternoon)

Actually Buffett and Alan Jackson - you're probably thinking of the group "Hey Good Lookin" cover...

In NYC, the mighty Z100 did what above poster mentioned what Q105 does now - "Friday on my Mind", "Working for the Weekend", "Bang the Drum All Day"... These days I have no clue what they're up to: Just checked Yes.com for this past Friday ay 5 PM, and in addition to their regular fare, they played DMX "Up In Here" at the top of the hour and "It Takes Two" about 10 minutes later.

I believe Scott Shannon took the Friday Festivities with him when he left Q105 for Z100 back in the early 80's.

Awwww man, you mean no more "Big Balls In Cowtown"?

I love CTQ, you can occasionally hear some great songs none of the other country stations would think of playing. They are programmed much better than CC co-owned 103.5.

Whoever programs the music does a pretty good job. I bet CTQ would love to have 103.5's signal though. Hell, they use their old stick on the north end of Palmetto

CTQ

Haven't heard CTQ with their new PD, but the station was sounding best when Rob Carpenter was at the helm (1998-2000). Not only was it the most unique sounding station in the market, but it was one of the most original-sounding country stations period. All the jocks knew how to work the phones and did so on EVERY break on EVERY shift. Rob Carpenter would often take a detour off the charts and make his own hits (even getting a C&D letter from Columbia Records for playing a non-album track and having it in power rotation.)

Talking about dayparting of songs, etc, I always start my Friday morning show with the Easybeats "Friday On My Mind" and then "Working for the Weekend." By the way, the Easybeats are an Australian group, one of the early icons of rock music down here.

The Friday 5 O' Clock Free-For-All/Flashback/Fix:

Bang the Drum All Day
Workin For the Weekend
5 O' Clock Somewhere
Take This Job and Shove It
Just Got Paid
and any song that mentions "weekend" or "Friday night"

Back in the day: novel concept, got listeners into it, celebrated the weekend
Today: one word......HACK! See also: living on billboards, food trailers/drives, etc.

Speaking of 101.5 'The Point,' how long can they be the "new 101.5 the point," they've been new for five years now.......same with the Eagle......

they should both use new slogans - 'The automation stations.'

103.5 in NYC has been dubbing itself "the new KTU" longer than both those stations combined...

btw Is it just me, or when "Just Got Paid" was first released, am I the only cat who mistook the reference to "party hoppin'" as "Holly Hunter"?

Holly Hunter? BWAHAHAHA... that's funny. I've had my share of odd lyrics... some of them intentional.

The thing that amazes me is that Cox in Tampa has so few jocks and non-drive shifts aren't even voice tracked, yet Clear Channel gets bashed for all the downsizing and voicetracking.

Me? I'd rather hear a live jock. But for my money, Cox is MUCH cheaper that CC.
(Is Dick Ring still alive or are they playing tapes of him from 1995?)
