101.7 THE HARBOR

Boston's newest station (Clear Channel" claims they play anything. But they don't!!!! Just like the recent former (Entercom's) "93.7 Mike FM" They also claimed they played everything.
Most times I tune into "101.7 The Harbor" all they play is Rock and Roll (Classic and Recent) In Boston, we have 92.9, 97.7 and 107.3 Same station, 100.7, and 105.7. Even 97.7 and 107.3 is the same, it's still five Rock and Roll station. It was the same with "93.7 Mike FM" all the time, all I ever heard was Rock and Roll
Now, if they say they play everthing, and if they don't want to put on any LIVE Local Host and save money that way. My idea, is they should do like this. I'm guessing it will still save them, but at least there will be a Host.
Since they (101.7 The Harbor) say they play anything. Here's what they should do.
-Weekdays-
-Midnight-6am "HOT AC" Dial-Global.com
-6am-3pm "AC" Dial-Global.com
-3pm-7pm "The Doug Banks Show" AURN.COM
-7pm-10pm "AC" Dial-Global.com
-10pm-Midnight "R Dub's "Slow Jams Radio"
-Weekends Noon-6pm "HOT AC" Dial-Global.com
Other times on weekends, put on some Urban AC two hour syndicated Radio shows, and some Smooth Jaz Two Hour Syndicated Radio shows.

All "we play everything" stations actually me "we play everything we think the narrow target demographic will put up with."

No intelligent station is going to play Megadeth, Bing Crosby, Garth Brooks, Kanye West, and Ludwig Van Beethoven.

Even your mix of formats would be asking for trouble. If you're a fan of hot AC, why listen during the day? If you're a fan of AC, why listen in the mornings? If you're a fan of either, why listen in the afternoons? If you're a fan of Dog Banks, why listen ANY other time?

Today's listeners don't have the time or patience to find out what you're playing, when. The best thing you can do to generate a consistent audience that comes back regularly and stays for long periods is to be consistent 24/7. McDonalds doesn't serve hamburgers at lunch and steak at dinner and hot wings overnight... some people even complain about them serving breakfast instead of Big Macs in the morning!

You may not like it, but ratings bear this out: your listeners should be able to "know" if they're going to like your station within 15 minutes (or three songs)... and they need to be confident they can get what you're offering 24/7.

If they want to hear something different, they will change stations... and you can't predict their likes and dislikes well enough to know when to play which format... not even the listener can do that, as it will change from day to day.

"Jack," "Bob," and all the rest all do this. I'm not a fan of the format, but their IS a method to their "madness."
