101.9 amp

CBS seems to be starting a trend...unless I am mistaken seems I'm hearing more jocks on cox stations K92.3 in particular then there used to be. Grace sounds great on Sunny btw.

This station has come full circle, having been Top 40/CHR as Q 102 (WQXQ/WDOQ) from 1976 till it became Adult Contemporary in 1984 (WCFI); classic rock in 1985 (WORZ); urban contemporary/hip hop in 1987 (WJHM) and now back to CHR as the Amp.

Yes it was. I was on-air at the "Q" in the early '80s and eventually went into sales, leaving for WAPE Jacksonville just before the format flipped to Transtar 41. We had an impressive studio in the very back of the Root Street Building, across the hallway from WMFJ-AM 1450 and the WMFJ transmitter room. I had never seen a radio building with the AM antenna/tower situation in the center of the building until I joined WDOQ/WMFJ.

Ron Samuels (I-100) told me that WQXQ was directy responsible for the birth of WNFI (I-100). I don't recall much of the story, but the gist was that He and Carl Como were managing WQXQ and it was doing very well, financially. It was some sort of profit share situation, sort of like they were partners. In 1979, the owner got greedy and wanted to retain more profit and there was an argument. The result was that Ron and Carl left on very bad terms with lots of name calling and threats on both sides. As Bugs Bunny says, "You realize, this means war". So, they hocked everything that they owned and bought WIYD in Palatka. There was no money to move into Daytona, so they eaked out a living, as a country station in Palatka, for more than a year, while slowely assembling their on-air lineup. Finally, they were able to finance the 1250' tower near Bunnell and build studios in Ormond Beach. When they signed on in 1981, they sent a black wreath to WDOQ. Later, they sent a black rose with a note that read "For all you do, this bud's for you". Two years later, WDOQ was gone.

A lot of bad decisions are made in this business & KARMA is a bitch!

Great station - I really enjoyed it on my recent trip to Orlando. I will probably stream it now that I am home.

Does this station use its RDS to send title/artists to users' radios? I tuned in the other day and the RDS lit up, but all that showed was the format of "Top 40."

The RDS for WJHM-FM 101.9 Amp Radio displays song titles & show names correctly on both my car & HD Radio.

Do other stations show title/artist? If not, maybe your radio is set to show the PTY. If you tune to 103.1 and it says "Country" then that's it.

Yes. Other stations in both Orlando and Tampa scroll title and artist...if that is in fact what they're sending out.

On my radio, when I tune in a station, shows the PTY info for a few seconds, then goes to the title/artist stuff. It just never gets there on 101.9.

I might have to dig out my HD radio to see what it does.

I don't listen to them, but I'll try in the car tonight. It just has PS display, no Radiotext or HD. The HD radio on my desk shows title/artist in the PAD on the HD1. The HD2 just says "Gospel JAMZ/102 Gospel JAMZ".

And I just dug out my HD radio. It was a gift when I worked in radio up north, but it's not been generally hooked up down here (too many radios, too little space!).

Tuning in 101.9 on the HD radio, a little unit by an outfit named "Directed", and using a wire/dipole antenna, I pick up 101.9 in HD with no trouble at all. In that mode, I get all kinds of station/artist/title info. Now, I believe that I recall that the info that HD radio sends is a different technology than RDS. It may use the same files, but the technology is different, right?

So could it be that 101.9's RDS data is stuck/broken/faulty, while the same info is scrolling normally on the HD side? I can recall occasionally prodding the engineers at our stations to give a kickstart to the RDS data every now and then.
