101.9 declares victory on earthquake coverage!

Every 10 minutes this morning, 101.9 has been running a minute-long promo after their traffic & weather, bombastically touting themselves as "New York's CLEAR news leader!" and doubling down on the lie that they are "New York's FIRST and ONLY FM all-news station!" Ironically, most of the promo consists of the reports of the *listeners* who they asked to call in with their personal reports of the quake -- which, if I'm not mistaken, counts as a *talk* station, not as a news station. The only legitimate news personality they feature in the promo is Jeff McKay.

Combine that with the excruciatingly long traffic and weather report it follows, and it seems to take up a good five-minute interruption in 101.9's actual "news" coverage, so probably out of every 15 minutes spent listening to them today, you're only getting about 5 minutes of actual "news", plus a few more minutes of tabloid fluff... and then it's back to the traffic/weather, commercials, and blowing-their-own-horn promo!

Somewhat off-topic except for the fact that it was an internet oldies station and its chat room heard here last evening, instead of terrestrial radio ....

A picture of the earthquake damage was posted. Some wag with a satire site had put it up for comment, along with a note about the courageous journalist who'd dared enter the area.

It was a picture of an outdoor patio table with three upright chairs plus one that had tipped over.

Ironically, most of the people that are commenting on this board about 101.9's progress (myself included) are outside the female demographic that 101.9 wants to reach with their news -- wait, what's that? Sabo says they're in panic mode and they're now concentrating on all human beings, 54 and under... Gotcha!

I also just remembered that when I first tuned in 101.9 after the quake, they were saying "An earthquake has struck Manhattan!!", making it sound like NYC was the epicenter.

@satech re: "101.9 after the quake... saying "An earthquake has struck Manhattan!!", making it sound like NYC was the epicenter": Yeah, that'll definitely appeal to the soccer mom demo...

The only station or stations entitled to 'declare victory' on a happenstancual natural disaster without sounding like complete frauds are the ones who predicted it.

Brings to mind the phrase....

"If a tree falls in the forest and there's nobody there to hear it, did it still make a sound?"

Lol Buggsy ....

If I can raise the ante a bit -- what else is the theme for hurricane parties except gambling? -- I remember Cliff the Mailman asking that age-old question of the general Cheers bar. And the puzzled Coach asked, 'If there's no one around, then how do they know it fell?'

In NE PA we're on the far outskirts at present of Irene. Barometer is a low 29.18 as I type this (and falling). It's still a story, if only for the postponements.

The truant officers called the PPMs will decide if WEMP and its top-heavy/female followers can declare victory at the end of this latest homewrecker. The PPMs have the final say, not some press release or radio forum. The PPMs will specify is anyone was around to hear the tree falling on the power lines.
