Thanks for your holiday wishes Howard. And let’s spread those wishes to everyone on this board as I know so many (like myself) are looking for work in this bad economy.
Howard, I hear ya… since 2000 it has been rule to not award licenses to those who have operated pirate stations. I am sure you are aware of both HR 1147 (endorsed by our own Rep. James McDermott) and S 592 (introduced by our own Senator Maria Cantwell) that look like a final game changer for LPFM. And I have heard that the current administration is doing away with the specific part of the rule that disallows former pirates from getting licensed legally. That ruling came down in the Bush administration (it looked to be a direct attack against Free Radio Berkeley in an effort to block them from getting licensed), and is going away with the current administration… from what I understand.
Also Howard (and any others that may doubt the legitimacy of my efforts), I am not sure if you have heard the station or not so it’s important to me that you know that I am not just some crazy nut job, cussing on the radio and playing every song with every four letter word I can find. Actually the station is quite the opposite. I play a very up-tempo mix of dance, pop, and alt rock. All the music is very positive, fun and upbeat. I air a lot of public service announcements (both recorded and live read) for the local organizations here on Capitol Hill and the Seattle city core. We talk about the issues that are important to Capitol Hill and the Seattle core area. The station is on the air to super serve the local community and to present that mission in a very fun and entertaining way that can lift the spirit of the listener. On Capitol Hill and in the Seattle urban core area, we have a lot going on. There is lots of construction and changes to neighborhood caricature, business struggles, relocations, closings. There are problems with crime, mostly thefts, and hard drug use. The Whore looks to the future with a positive attitude and provides information that the community needs to be the best it can be.
Let me share part of a recent email sent to me from a listener:
Dear DJ Alan,
Your pirate radio station gives me absolute proof of the existence of God. I am a Capitol Hill resident and I listen to the whore driving to work (until I drive through the 99 tunnel) and home (as soon as I get out of the tunnel it is time for 101.9).
I love the happy uptempo dance beats. I love the rare alt-pop you play too. I tell as many people as I can about the Whore… The whore has changed my life. I have stopped drinking, started going to AA, got a job, got out of a toxic relationship, and started working on creating dumb funny Youtube movies, and writing music. Your pirate radio station makes me happy to be alive. When a really good track starts playing, I loving beam at my car stereo and I happily exclaim, "I love you The Whore." I am being serious.
I spent in excess of $50 at radio shack and bought an FM signal amplifier. Since I think all the other stations are crap and disgusting, this is only for The Whore.
Thank you DJ Alan. The Whore is everything radio should be. I believe in Angels now.
…..That is why I do what I do and it is emails and communication with listeners like that will keep me motivated.
Sure the name ‘The Whore’ sounds all sexed up and illicit and stuff but really the station is very clean and full of positive vibes. I play clean versions of songs- or I’ll clean them up myself. And I am sure that plenty of folks on this board will agree with me that it is a perfect name for a radio station given the state of the industry since the early 80’s. I am changing the name of the station when the website is all ready to go. It is a name that will be ‘sponsor friendly’ and actually better describe the product and reflect the station’s image. So calling it ‘The Whore’ is really just a stunt and I have only begun to scratch the surface of where I want the stations public service level to be at once the name change occurs.
If there is anyone out there that hasn’t heard the station and just thought ‘The Whore’ was nothing but some rebellious and foolish effort- I hope I have changed your mind and I hope that I now have your support. After all, I am just another out of work broadcaster that is trying to make an actual success out of something I love so much. I’d like to be successful enough that I can one day give some good jobs to others out there that are looking for work too.
So HAPPY HOLIDAYS to EVERYONE!!!
DJ Alan
