101.9 FM NEWS Now On Facebook

This looks to me to be fake, started by someone not connected to Merlin, as the facebook page listing is 'FM News 101.9' instead of '101.9 FM News' which coincides with two websites http://www.1019fmnews.com and http://www.1011fmnews for WWWN, and the two stunting stations '101.9 FM New' and '101.1 FM New'. It would be poor marketing on Merlin's part to register a name different than the station, kinda like Coca-Cola having a facebook page called Cola-Coca.

I stand corrected. It looks as if it will indeed be FM News 101.9 just like FM News 101.1, but is this still all stunting or not? http://www.fmnewschicago.com is partially up as I write this post which doesn't seem professional at all (their are menus and sub menus which refer to html navigation, etc). Also as I write this post http://www.fmnewsnewyork.com is under construction.

Nope, no 'stunting' or whatever you call it, it's the real deal in Chicago, they just launched. No stream yet.

are they all news/talk now ?

What I read elsewhere, total news, no music anymore.

Echoing a sentiment from NXEA earlier, regarding Twitter accounts: I had mentioned that the @1019FMNew account had been titled "FM 101.9 New," and is still the case.

Today, there are two new Twitter accounts: @1019fmnews, with no followers and its page in "protected" status, bears the name "Merlin Media," while Chicago's @1011fmnews account is assigned to something called "Dave Williams."

And to make things even more confusing: it appears that there's already been an established @merlinmedia account, located in Romania - and much active well before Randy Michaels & Co. assembled his own "Merlin Media" entity. Hmmm...

Have you heard the clip over on the Chicago board for WWWN? Certainly not what you would expect from a seasoned pro like Michaels, and the website was still just a template when the station debuted, now it is just a 'can we have your opinion' page. Emmis Interactive is a web company in its own right, and you would think a web site could have been put Istarting to think the 'news' formats are also stunts, because format you want to do debut (and do it terribly) is news, which needs to sound credible and professional, and the clip I heard was anything that but.

Do we know for sure if 101.9 FM will debut with their all news station on Monday or whenever now that Chicago WWWN-FM has ?

I think what I meant to write was: The last format you would want to execute terribly out-of-the-box is a news format because you need to sound credible, and the clip for WWWN was terrible. Lets hope WEMP gets off to a better start.

This whole ramping-up thing really doesn't make sense to me either. If you play Hot AC songs to appeal to women, it doesn;t means they will stick around to listen to a female-oriented news station.

I'm not into Sportstalk, so if RXP were to have flipped to FM Sports would I continue to listen just because they played rock prior?

I would think you would want to make a huge splash as a news station: habe all your ducks in a row, all your reporters filing stories, and sound 100% from day one.

What I heard in Chicago was pretty lame, and to tell you the truth, this segue from RXP to 101.9 FM New, to FM News 101.9 is pretty lame as well. They should have let RXP continue, even if only automated, and then, bang, at 12:01am Monday go all-news with a complete website as well, listen-online facility, maybe some newspaper/TV ads, etc etc.

Plus, by starting at midnight it gives you a few hours to see if any bugs pop up just in time for AM drive.

I would have probably run a countdown on 101.9 saying:

"starting Monday, New York's First FM station coems on 101.9. Tune into FM 101.9 in 3 days, 23 hours, 21 minutes.... blah blah blah, etc, etc. Anyone who tunes in will get the message to tune back in on Monday, instead of hearing some Hot AC stuff with basically no mention of a change in format. They've squandered a huge opportunity to generate interest .

I don't think they doing it that way. I think that maybe on monday a couple of hours before the launch we see a sort of press info on radioinsight.com or allaccess.com. In Chicago happens the same on the Chicago Radio and Media Board.
B.t.w. I hope for a livestream direct at the start, because Chicago has still no livestream and that's a no go and not professional.

You've made an excellent point erwin33 with reference to the lack of an online-stream. And secondly, the radio station format flips aren't for the benefits of us radio geeks, so if they are doing it with press releases to All Access and Chic radio/media all it does is let us know; the people they should be caring about and targeting are the average everyday non-radio people and citizens of NYC and Chicago who don't read all-access.

You can bet in Chicago that WBBM will sound spot-on when it debuts on 105.9 Monday.

I don't think I've ever witnessed a weaker debut of a format from an operation stacked with such veteran/professional employees.

Exactly.
