101.9 moving to Memphis

The FCC has just issued a construction permit that will move 101.9 KIYS into Memphis licensed to Crawfordsville.

101.7 KRLW Walnut Ridge is seeking to upgrade its signal to serve Jonesboro once 101.9 moves.

101.9 will downgrade to a class C3 with the move but will provide a 60dbu coverage to nearly a million people while the curent signal only reaches just over 300,000 people.

The plan is two use one of towers that KWAM uses

You know, they had to slide that in with a shoehorn. Note the pattern is slightly notched to the SE, apparently to get it to clear Fulton, MS. 102.3 to the west is really close, too.

As far as format... the larger question is who will own it? 101.9 is still in the Clear Channel stable. CC is full-up, as you probably know. They are allowed to own 4 FMs, which they have now -- 95.7, 97.1, 101.1, 102.7. They really can't add. I wonder what the plan is.

Signal won't be bad, though. City grade (70 dBu) goes as far as Poplar & Kirby, though not as far as beautiful Germantown. Some mornings out east, it'll get some co-channel from Fulton, a C2.

DE, I thought KIYS was one of the old CC stations being LMA'd by Bobby Caldwell at East Arkansas Broadcasters, am I wrong?

I understand they're going to put it on a flatbed truck and roll 24/7 on the beltline. That'll keep those meters twitching.

I don't know who operates it. What matters is who owns it. I'll have to go some reading to see how this has been handled from a regulatory standpoint in the past.

I can envision several scenarios regarding what could happen. But, I'll be very curious to see what will happen.

But, it's an interesting experiment. Is it better to be a new, C3 move-in in a large but depressed city, trying to establish one's self in a rotten economy against a sea of Class Cs, many of which aren't doing well, OR is it better to remain a dominant Class C in a smaller market where you have been establishment for years. I suppose we'll see.

It seems that this move may have made more sense when they filed, as radio stations were still fetching decent money when sold. We could still talk high multiples and "stick value." Now, the landscape has changed.

This is one of those times that I will avoid pontificating. In the current environment, there are no clear answers. All bets are off.

Clear Channel sold all of its stations in Jonesboro except KIYS to EAB. KIYS was LMA'ed EAB, but Clear Channel wouldn't sell it outright. EAB had an option to buy if Clear Channel couldn't move it into Memphis.

From a purely selfish standpoint, it's a shame this station is moving.

101.7 is one of the clearest frequencies in Memphis. In the last month, or two, I have heard Jackson, MS, Tuscaloosa, AL, Texarkana, AR, metro-Dallas, Savannah, TN (very common) and just a few days ago, a new translator in Dyersburg -- all without really trying. That will not be possible with the new signal, especially if 101.9 adds IBOC.

Oh, well. Such is life.

Are they staying with the current format?

K~

I see some twangin' in their future.

Of course I also saw me winning that 100 and something million dollar powerball.

Well see which one comes true first.

> ... twangin' ...

While I am not ruling anything out, I would not be AT ALL surprised if we look at a trade paper soon and see that the signal has been sold to EMF, or someone like that. When companies need cash, that's what happens.

If that turns out to be the case I hope that somehow this will bring Air 1 into Memphis, either on 101.9 or with 101.9 becoming K-LOVE and 94.9 and/or 94.7 becoming Air 1. I know that could turn out to be wishful thinking though.
