...YOU'RE DAMN RIGHT THEY ARE. I am going to tell you, I flipped around on the net for Irene coverage in the NYC area, because I have family in the area. These guys had THE BEST COVERAGE.......HANDS DOWN! Now, I know that people have been running their mouths about the validity of this format, but let me tell you something.......IT WORKS! You have some major braodcast professionals behind this product, all of which have been extremely successful throughout their careers! I see WEMP being a top 5 player in the market very soon. I am also going to say that WINS should be ashamed of their coverage. NEVER OPEN THE MICROPHONE UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO SAY..... Way to go, guys and I am glad that you have been able to continue to provide LIVE coverage to NYC. I'm one of your biggest fans!

Your first post and in CAPITAL LETTERS yet. Very impressive.

Not only his first post, he registered with his radio consulting firm's email address. OOPS. hahaha What else did you expect him to say when he's getting a paycheck

Sure had me fooled ;D

Re: THEY ARE DOING SOMETHING RIGHT....

I just heard a promo on WINS taking a very clear pot-shot at 101.9... it went something like this: "While other stations are patting themselves on the back for their coverage of the storm, we'd like to instead take this time to thank the police, firefighters, and rescue squads..." and then it ended with "New York's one and only all-news station, 1010 WINS"... with special emphasis on "one and only".

101.9 is such a blip on the radar I wish they wouldn't respond at all, don't even legitimize the trainwreck.

Certainly the appropriate sentiment; but I agree with those here who think it's a mistake for WINS to allude to 101.9, because, otherwise, mathematically, NOBODY KNOWS IT'S THERE. Sure, they're running some spots, but at what rate?

Admittedly, July and August are slow news days for radio’s trade press. So forgive your daily fax-blasters for eating the Merlin Media story with-a-fork-and-spoon. Hey, format flips in markets #1 and 3 would be news any time, if not every day.

But stop 10 people on the street in New York or Chicago, and ask 'em about it.

This is an "inside baseball" story until -- as ANY new station would have to -- these stations attract new cume.
Status quo, their audience is drive-by, admittedly more-opportune-on-FM than AM.

i must say, they are growing on me. I like the variety -not the same news stories over and over. I can't listen to ANY of the music stations in NYC (no interest in any of the programming since most of it is meant for the under 30 crowd) this is a nice alternative--good job Merlin ,

I don't think they are; it's more brand reinforcement at this point.

The problem is, the "variety" you speak of is made possible by a large number of fluff pieces.

How's this for an idea: the "no-news-repeat workday"! They've got Pete Salant on board, right? It could happen! ::)

Wondering why HE wasn't on 101.9, instead of being on 101.5 sucking up to the Gov like he usually does.

Nice try.

MIGHT we have discovered MedianJ's new radio-info handle?

Nah. Talk isn't my bag of chips (I'm a political lefty, so most of WKXW's audience would have me drawn and quartered). And if you see my post history, I actually DEFEND Eric Johnson and 101.5...who I think is one of the nicest guys in the biz, and a great PD (he helped me grow as a jock and took the time to help when most PD's dread airchecking jocks).

But isn't guessing who's who on a message board fun! Here's fast traffic

At least "fast traffic" is one of the few parts of NJ 101.5 that draws a nonpartisan audience. Everyone gets stuck in traffic!

Wow, how embarrassing for Merlin Media, haha. Something tells me Randy Michaels isn't as smart as most people claim he is ;)

101.9 shouldn't call themself news. It should be branded as "woman's lifestyle", because that's what it is. I've had it turned on for around 20mins a day for the past couple weeks and it sounds like TMZ with traffic reports, and really awful banter between the hosts. What's wrong with just reading the news? Why do they need the dull, bimbo, clueless hosts to talk when they''ve proven that they're not knowledgeable and rather immature and dull.

They keep running these horrible, mind-numbing spots. One is about when you re-hang your clothes, hang it the other way so you know that it's been worn that season already. Another one explaining to Mom's the danger of letting kids running up to dogs and petting them without asking, and a bunch of really numbing, nonsensical, drivel. I've not heard one Technology or Science story. Also, the station sounds extremely amateur. Every few minutes you'll hear a phone off the hook, dead-air, the wrong time, flubs, etc. After listening, it makes me appreciate 1010 WINS that much more.

Agreed. I would prefer a more hard news format. Sounds too casual and immature.
