101.9 Spunk FM Seatte

Is being relaying by local Dance Pirate... Radio TransAmerica @ 107.5.... Awesome station.... Both of them

Well... That makes two stations so far that have rebroadcasted Spunk. I consider that a compliment soooooo THANKS!

Another pirate station in Selah Washington (subburb of Yakima) on 107.9 occasionally rebroadcasts Spunk FM.

BTW: I am in the process of switching to Part 15... The FCC was looking for me in my neighborhood and I shut the transmitter off at 9am the next morning (so I could inform the many listeners that would listen to the station while stuck in I-5 and downtown Seattle traffic). More info on Spunk's Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/SpunkFMSeattle

And of course, www.spunkfm.com and www.spunkfm.com/mobile.html to hear the stream (Mobile streams are recorded, the only way I can do mobile for free). No money in means no money out ;-)

Hey Alan, that's cool that someone would relay your station, but I must ask....What is the point of another station doing that? I mean, I'm sure your operation is great, but IF I had a transmitter, and I designed a station to broadcast....wouldn't that throw listeners off, if all the sudden they hear another brand mentioning another dial setting??? Just seems like a bizarre concept.

Nick- I LOVE C89. A few coworkers of mine in the industry were once students at Nathan Hale High’s C89. Randy Schlager (whom does PowerMix on C89) and I went to school together on Mercer Island. Randy loved my pirate radio station that I ran in Junior High and High School. I am friends with Trent Von, and Richard Dalton (whom teaches broadcasting at Nathan Hale as well as being on air there). While C89 plays a great mix, they tend to stay more on the pop edge of dance, while Spunk FM plays more of a techno and rock tinged edge. Spunk also plays classic cuts now and then, Disco to the present, where as C89 stays very current, at least during most of their programming.

DJ Perry- I agree that the branding issue would be totally confusing, especially when it comes to my sweepers/liners that mention my frequency of 101.9. But then again we are talking about pirate broadcasters that are not really thinking too much about the marketing side of things- they just want to put something on the air that isn’t available locally by the commercial operators. As you can imagine, most pirate operations start out small with little budget for studio gear. They want to sound ‘hot’ on the air, but using most MP3 players (stand alone, or computer based) don’t really mix that well and have to be manually programmed at some point to make the song flow good, and to place sweepers/ids/liners/etc in appropriate places. There are plenty of ‘freeware’ programs that will do this, but many pirate operations lack even a spare computer to dedicate to this task, much less the time it takes to program the freeware to act as desired, load the music optimally, etc. There is a lot of work in setting up ‘scheduling software’- LOTS OF WORK! Trust me on that one.

I am sure that any station rebroadcasting Spunk (as I transmit it) has the ultimate goal of being able to do their own programming 24/7/365, and is just rebroadcasting Spunk during the times where they do not have a live DJ available (or a good scheduling system of their own in place).

MY goal for Spunk FM is to have affiliates around the country that are also branded as Spunk FM, but with sweepers/liners/etc produced for them that are local to the areas they serve. Like how JACK FM is marketed… sort of. Spunk is more than just a ‘branding and liners package’ though, it also has specific programming elements and practices that are part of the concept. These affiliates will all be licensed stations that will pay to be affiliates. I LOVE my craft, but I got to feed the kitty (DJ Magic) and pay the rent like everyone else. ;-) Since corporate radio no longer has the money to pay for talent like they did in the past, this is my personal answer to using my talent to make money at what I LOVE to do and to entertain the hell out of my fans and listeners.

DJ ALAN,, Im sorry to hear that the FCC is looking for ya,,, But if your gonna do part 15, you might want to consider doing AM PART 15,,, As you can cover 2 or 3 miles that way, Part 15 FM is very hard to stay in complience and get out more than 1 or 2 blocks. The relaying was because.. WELL,,, I enjoyed your programing,, the music mix,, and the concept of DJ Magic,, Your Cat being a DJ,, so I thought I would give you some RF just to give and show support,, as I like when people relay me.

So that was you Mid West Clubber... Thanks! I appreciate your compliment very much.

Yup... For years I was trying to figure out the purrfect job for my cat Magic. He always jumps up on the mixer, and messes with the turntables when I am doing a show on the air, or even when I've hosted parties at my old house. Seemed a natural thing to give him an airshift. Viral Video to come.

I have thought about the Part 15 AM route because of the distance factor. But I'll need to figure out a good antenna design as I live in an apartment building. The two bay circular polarity antenna that I built for the FM was a bear enough to build and then mount in a window case. AM would be a lot harder I think. Especially coming up with a good ground plane for it... but I'll check it out more as I go.

And DJ Perry, you are so right. I spent dam near a grand on my OTS AV software when I bought it but, get this, my OTS AV is running on a 14 year old Dell with a 450mhz P2 and 384mb RAM. You could get that computer for free if you looked around on Craigslist -or- DUMPSTER DIVE! ;-)
And there is plenty of good scheduling Freeware, good enough to get a station up and sounding good. The station in Selah Washington is just starting out and the guy that runs it is pretty new to the whole wacky wadio world. He has passion though. I can see it in his emails.

DJ Alan
