It's just an atmosperic thingee-abob.
It occurs more often in the summer months;
you can get stations from afar that transmit
on the same frequency as your local station.
Being a resident out East On LI,
I often pull in the "Cool" rock station
instead of the "Smooth" jazz station on 101.9.

Aside from the atmospheric fluke that you experienced, I see little likelyhood of a change on 101.9 Its a background friendly format that may show gains when the new PPM measurements begin this fall.

No one ever listens to CD 101 anymore. Its time to make the flip to Dance/CHR Radio.
They took chill off because their core audience was leaving in droves, and the cheap folks at Emmis realized that they might have to spend money marketing the station to attract the younger audience they were seeking. CD101.9 has done well to maintain the cume they have considering the way they dissed their core audience 2-1/2 years ago. Even without any real outside promotion, they managed to regain the loyalty of their audience at a time when things could have very well cratered for them.
...but the smooth jazz audience is getting older and that has to be a red flag. Emmis almost sold 101.9 and they could try again, or maybe try something younger on that channel (as long as it was CHEAP to run, that's the Emmis mantra), but dream on if you think it will be CHR dance - that would be stupid considering they would be competing for the same age group Hot-97 is having a hard time holding on to. Plus their not exactly brain surgeons with that dance CHR thing they are trying in LA, now are they. And the 4 people who would listen to the dance format all post on here and never consider the business aspect of that bone head move.

You so called "business" insiders claim to know about dance music. When Emmis programmed Hot 97 has a dance/chr it was always in the top 5 of the ratings book. They played the CHR/Dance songs first that later Z100 and PLJ and some other stations would later add on. Who is listening to Smooth Jazz as its being programmed now in NY? What offices are having it played? Whos blasting it in their cars or on the beach?

The main issue I believe was the mix of music which didn't really mix. You can't play the Brazilian Girls followed by Quincy Jones. They were simply trying to appeal too many target demos.
The chill format in and of itself was innovative, outside of the box and a hot music format in New York, off radio of course. If done and marketed correctly it could have been quite a niche station perhaps on a par to what WLIR once was.

In the late 80's and early 90's - the era you are referencing above - there was so much available good, MAINSTREAM dance product.
But those days are long gone. There's no way that a station focused on current dance music today would be a Top 5 station. The available product now is just too obscure. How many legitimate current dance HITS can you name? Maybe September's "Cry For You", but even that is nowhere near as popular as what was around 15 to 20 years ago.
Why do you think Hot 97 evolved to hip-hop in the first place? Hip-hop, as irritating as it is, has lasted a lot longer than anyone ever expected. And it's CONSISTENTLY popular. Dance will go through phases where it's popular for a few months, and then it fades away. These days, Dance is lucky to have even one mainstream hit IN A YEAR.
And yes, I'm well aware that dance or dance-intensive radio works in other counties. That doesn't matter. This is America. Much of what we do & what we like - in terms of music and so much else - is different/backwards from the rest of the world. Yes, NY has an incredible amount of ethnic diversity, but not enough to make dance a successful format in the market.
