101.9

I heard a station on this frequency with an Urban format (jockless during the time I was listening) while driving home from work this afternoon. Solid enough to override my smartphone FM transmitter in the AZ143/I-10/Broadway Curve area, but faded out completely by the time I got to Elliot Rd. on I-10, and inaudible anywhere in Ahwatukee. I didn't hear an ID at 4:00.

I don't see anything in CDBS or RadioLocator listed for 101.9 in the Phoenix area. Given how long I was able to listen and how strong the signal was along the 143 and I-10, I'm ruling out another in-car transmitter. Pirate in South Phoenix or Tempe, maybe?

I ran into many an overpowered Siriux/XM transmitter that would completely wipe out my car's version of 101.9 when I lived in the east valley. And 4 p.m. on I-10 from the I-17 split to Broadway Curve and beyond can be parking lot. I remember many a commute trying to find an open channel so I didn't have to listen to their definition of music. You would think that there is enough urban music on the Phoenix airwaves that a pirate doesn't need to clutter it up.

Actually, the music wasn't bad (i.e. it wasn't rap). But given that the signal was so strong that it wiped out my own transmitter for about 5 miles means that (1) it wasn't another car transmitter or (2) the guy was right next to me the entire time. No car was directly behind me, in an adjacent lane, or in front of me for that entire stretch from AZ 143 & University to I-10 & Elliot, so I'm still ruling out the second option.

But 101.9 is a common frequency for car transmitters in the Ahwatukee area. I've heard several, and they don't stay in there for very long.

Same station on the air this morning - audible starting at I-10 & Elliot, becoming clear just north of Guadalupe & all the way to work, NW of AZ 143 & University. This time they were playing rap with the occasional "F-word." Almost definitely a pirate.

My guess is that the pirate is somewhere along Broadway. There are those shady looking townhouses just west of 48th St, the ones with bars on the 2nd story windows. :)
That or one of those old subdivisions just off 48th St.

Heard the pirate this morning on the way in to work along the I-10 at the Broadway Curve as well. It came in so strong, that it totally overpowered the adjacent channel KAHM 102.1 FM from Prescott. No more beautiful music along the Broadway Curve!

I do have to say, though, the pirate picked a pretty good location to operate. The I-10 Broadway Curve is one of the most heavily trafficked areas in the valley, especially during rush hour. This pirate knows what he's doing, too bad it's illegal and he's broadcasting obscene language on top of that.

Does he have a west side translator so we can hear obscene language in Buckeye? Aside from potty mouth comments from students commenting about tuition, life at the Media Hut can be darned close to boring!

Man, you must have one powerful receiver! I couldn't get 'em at all east of McClintock on the 60.
They came in good at the Fry's Electronics parking lot yesterday, and today (3/17) AT THE QT AT 48th St./Baseline.
I used my work phone (w/video capabilities) to make kinescope-like airchecks at both locations and hope to get them on YouTube soon.
(Cell video (or video cam) in your car is about the best way to get an aircheck of a pirate, unless you have a strong receiver or are very close to the guy's xmitter.)

I've never heard them east of the 101. That's where they fade out completely when driving east on the 60.
