101 kgb turning 80...!

how many stations in the usa have the same 3 call letters?NONE in san diego.give propps to kgb..happy birthday!

I was truly amazed at the big celebration the program director set up....................................
........................oh wait, he totally missed it! No wonder he's almost fired! Thankfully KGB will be around long after the corporate TOOL is gone. Thanks to Keith Olberman/MSNBC for pointing out what should have been a huge local celebration by our own KGB.... :-\

i even called up that "little iddiot"(thanks shelly dunn!)about kgb turning 80.i simply said happy birthday kgb.he diddnt even put that on the air.i cant wait for him to get canned!

The "Little Idiot" didn't play back your call because he ain't live - he's voice tracked. He can't do a live break to save his lame ass, so he voicetracks then sits there. Gee, Clear Channel sure is getting their money's worth with him! HAHAHA ;D

If it costs CCU money, they won't do it. With the pathetic and hideous buyout, all spending by the company is nothing.

With the loss of the private buy out, how's that workin' out?? Imagine the blood bath if it does happen. The suits should coordinate with the blood bank.

Actually, it's the call letters that are turning 80 since KGB-FM is not really the direct successor of KGB-AM.

Don't forget, there were many years when KGB-AM and KGB-FM co-existed, always separately programmed, the AM being Top 40 and the FM being Album Rock. It's not like they moved the AM station to 101.5.

Radio purist will say that 101.5 is one of the few stations with five call letters; and the three call letter station on AM went away a long time ago.

The call letters of KGB originated on 2 other stations before coming to San Diego in 1928. Pickwick Broadcasting hired a programmer by the name of George Bowels and changed the AM 1330 KFBC (the Normal Heights Station) to KGB K-west of the Mississippi G-George B-Bowels.
101.5 Did not sign on the air until the early 1950's and at that time it was owned by the Rabell family that owned 1240, and 101.5's original call letters were KSON-FM and 1240 was KSON. The Rabell's were not making money with 101.5 so they sold it to KGB broadcasting inc. (owned by Marion R. Harris at the time), and in 1958 it became KGB-FM, but when Boss radio hit in 1965 it became KBKB. In 1972 Ron Jacobs convinced the Brown's to change it back to KGB-FM and it has been there since, but the KGB call letters really belong on its original home of 1360 that is the herritage station. Last year was the 85th anniversary of 1360 San Diego's oldest licensed station, and yes KGB-FM/101.5 is a 5 call letter station it's legal ID is KGB-FM San Diego. The KGB call letters are STILL grandfathered to 1360 and can go no where else, that is the reason why it is KGB-FM. So in reality the KGB three letter calls are dead, the 5 letter call is still active. So there is a condensed history of the call letters. If you wanted to know more you should have listened to the 85th anniversary show!

Also another note on San Diego call letters, The station to continuously have the same call letters is the Legendary 1170 KCBQ it changed to KCBQ in the late 40s and they have stayed on that signal and frequency since their inception. KCBQ stands for

K-west of the Mississippi
C-Columbia
B-Broadcasting
Q-Quality
