Actually the official date is May 16th. Kracko remembers it quite well. Prior to the sign on the night before, the cracked top notch engineer was putting the final touches on the equipment, he was even playing some of his favorite tunes and making a few on air dedications to his sweetie at the time... He even dedicated "Freebird" to her.. I guess that is what you call love..
Prior to noon on the big day, more fine tuning and tweeking, equipment check ups, sound processing check ups, music logs, no need for a lengthy commercial log, there were none on day one. Then at noon time, Vox VP Ken Barlow officially kicked off the launch of Classic Rock 101, The Fox.. the first song ever played, "Long Live Rock".. The big imaging voice.. Classic Rock 101.(pause) The Fox.. Somehow the Fox wound up with the best imaging for all the rock / classic rock stations in the Vox Radio Group.
The small total staff of 4, had in no way any submissive attitude to the well established players in the market. Baker did an awesome job making the station sound as good as any rocker in a large market, let alone Rutland.. The bar was raised locally when the Fox signed on, and after a few years toiling as a corporate vanilla flavored generic classic rocker, the Fox very much today appears to have the same swagger and attitude (both on air and in sales) as those who put it on the air 7 years ago..
Happy 7th Birthday, 101 The Fox..
