1010 History

I remember WINQ Seffner (wink radio) A mix of news and local talk circa 1970. They were a daytime-only station.

1971 due to the station’s inability to attract a consistently large listening audience. 0pt]The two-way phone conversation programming was dropped and the station switched to a country music and news format. However, CBS news, Arthur Godfrey, and other network services were retained. It also closed its offices and studios in the Hillsboro Hotel and moved to the tower site on Highway 574 in Seffner which became its new city of license.

This was included in my prior post!

By the way KS, how do you enjoy paing those personal property taxes? We lived in Topeka for a number of years! ($760 for my VW Jetta's licence plates!)

1010's biggest problem has always been coverage. They have a good narrow east-west signal, but nothing north-south. 50,000 watts from Seffner that cant be heard in Bradenton is pretty poor coverage.

I have always questioned that "50kw" signal. Where is it? Are they including the light bulbs for the security lighting in the Parking Lot?

It must have the strangest pattern that touches all of the farms and lakes and none of the roads.

It isn't even good in St. Pete for an East-West pattern.

This is designed to be humorous, but I'd really like to know what was the intention of the signal and did it accomplish it?

It's so the sales staff could tell potential advertisers that the station is 50,000 watts strong and hope they don't ask 50,000 watts strong, but how.

Ok, so, I'll include the Gulf, Bay, and fishes.

If you're out on a gambling ship, or perhaps stranded and waiting for the Coast Guard....then again, listening to some of the tripe there might make you want to just dive overboard and end it all...

Signal is really good in the dead center of the state on SR60, even all the way over at YeeHaw junction. But not in Odessa, lol

There are many AM stations which the FCC should never have licensed. 1010AM is one of them.
Back in 1960 when the station was originally licensed, Rex Rand knew that Tampa was expanding to the north and to the south.
He should have known that the station's signal could not cover the developing areas.
WQYK-AM does a good job of covering the Lakeland/Winter Haven market. They put a nice signal into Cocoa and Melbourne on the east coast.
At power-change in the morning, they also put a nice signal into south Texas.
Sadly, they can't cover the entire Tampa Bay market. They never will.

If I am not mistaken, I believe the original WINQ 1010 antenna pattern, in part, was designed to protect co-channel WCNU 1010 across the Gulf to the North in Crestview.

Correct. That is one of the original protections.
The existing pattern puts out nearly 250kw in the main lobes. In the deepest (NE and NW) nulls ... 158 watts.
Nothing they can do will permit them to cover the entire Tampa Bay market.

Haha I don't pay those. I'm 18 and still living at home. I think the taxes are outrageous!

Here's another directional AM that has out-lived it's time...
Gordon McLendon's MIGHTY 1190 in Dallas:

It takes 12 towers to make that pattern!

A very expensive site and station to operate.

The Metroplex has outgrown the city grade contour, the station has had many owners and dozens of failed formats since the glory Top-40 days of the 50s and 60s. Now, I see it is country and owned by Clear Channel...?
