1010 Sports: Notes from the floorboards

- "Station Manager" Mike Pepper has been keeping a low profile the last few months. The decision to put "The Dan Patrick Show" on was not his but rather a mandate from corporate who wanted something more "professional sounding" on the coveted 9AM-12PM slot. Ratings for all the shows are terrible, and it was Pepper's idea to bring back the sports format (after classic country...after The Buzz).

- The station is essentially a sports version of Tan Talk. The Sports Chix, J.P. Peterson, and The Tampa Two do not draw a salary from CBS, but rather get a larger percentage of self-generated advertising revenue than contracted talent (and in the Chix case the word talent is used very loosely). Outside of their scant live reads, the Chix don't earn anything (Hooters basically buys the airspace for them as part of their advertising budget) and just do the show for fun.

- J.P. Petersen has been criticized internally for the insane number of live reads and sponsors he brings on as guests. J.P. is paying tons in alimony/child support to his ex-wife and barely breaks even on his show. "Big Papi" David Ortiz has rubbed a lot of the office workers the wrong way and there is a growing push to get J.P. to dump Ortiz and do the show solo. Ortiz actually tried to convince his bosses to let him do all of the station imaging, which was met with bemusement.

- No one thinks the Tampa Two are any good, but they're better than Pepper and Kraznycki (sp?).

- There are no overnight boardops, obviously.

Damn, I bet they wish they still had the lineup they had in 2003: (back in the "1010 the team" days)

TJ Rives - morning drive
Sport chicks - 10-noon
Scot Brantley and Nighttrain Lane - middays
The Replacements (Cowhead, Brent, Amy) - afternoon drive

Granted, back then 1250/620 WDAE still owned them completely with Tony Bruno, Chris Thomas and Duemig, but at least Cowhead was entertaining sometimes.

Mike Pepper is a ******, everyone that has ever worked for him hates the guy, just ask Joe Fritz, Cowhead and some of the others who left. All of their hosted shows are absolute trainwrecks now.

I have pretty much given up on sports talk radio period. Too negative for me, and always seem to be the same topics over and over. But many enjoy and 1010 continues to change and grow. I hope it all works out for Pepper and everyone there.

On another subject does anyone know what become of Bobby Fenton who used to have the 9am-Noon time slot at 1010?

Leave Mike Pepper alone.

He's a Volunteer. He's paid by WQYK-FM. 1010 has no payroll other than a couple of minimum wage board ops.

How can you expect a business to run if you don't pay anybody?

Even Lighthall and T Kraz aren't paid by the station.

Their salary comes from the traffic service they work for.

CBSBoardOp and exboardop,

Wow... isn't anonymity great? While you have some things correct, you are way off on a few. However, it is not my job to inform the ignorant, so you will continue to be incorrect in your total assessment. For some reason, I don't think you are going to let that bother you. But anonymity, while trying to stir crap up, is the biggest form of cowardism, so congratulations to you.

I actually am aware of who one of you is, and let me just say your comments do not surprise me.

I'm so glad I don't waste my time reading wayward thoughts from disenchanted people who had/are having a difficult time making it radio. Unfortunately, I was told I should look so I did... now there's 10-15 minutes of my life (a smoke break for the both of you) I won't get back.

Just because you don't like me, remember your half truths may actually be harming someone else... but again, I don't think you care about what you do to others.

I am continually amazed that there are people who can not cut it in life, that need to criticize, not critique (there is a difference), others to make themselves feel better. And you two, definitely fit the bill... Oh maybe that's why "people" don't like me, I speak my thoughts... As for Cowhead, he and I might have had a difference of opinion or two with regards to certain situations, but we're pretty straight now, I think... as a matter of fact, I have the utmost respect for what he's been doing radio-wise... very impressive! And Joe Fritz, who's been gone to Cincinnati for 7 or more years now, we've never had a problem... now there are quite a few, usually those who can't grab the concept of work, that certainly have their problems with me, but those people, honestly, don't bother me that they're bitter towards me.

Have a nice day,

Oh look, here's a concept... a signature, Mike Pepper

... and feel free to write away, I do not intend to respond, let alone read your posts.

No Pep you're wrong...I hate you !

hahahahahhahah

Hey Mike, in the event that you do read this -- Are you going to bring back Skip Mahaffey? I heard he's a free agent...

Wow, this is a whole big to do about sports talk on the message board. Good for sports talk! To be honest, when I first saw this thread I was just excited that someone was talking about sports radio to begin with.

First, to answer TampaRadioFan, I am still living and working in Tampa, but not currently in radio itself. I hope to be back doing a show whenever I can because it really is a lot of fun. Tampa is my home, so I'm not going anywhere. Thanks for wondering out loud about me. It means a lot that you thought to even ask.

Second, I never had any problems with Pepper, and found him a good guy to work for/with. I was happy for the chance to work at 1010. I'm not just saying that because he might read this. I think Texas should've been Florida's opponent in the national title game, not Oklahoma. It wouldn't have mattered though because Florida would've beaten either of them. This part I am saying because Pepper might read this.

Finally, I have to take exception to the following claim by the originator of this thread:

"The decision to put "The Dan Patrick Show" on was not Pepper's but rather a mandate from corporate who wanted something more "professional sounding" on the coveted 9AM-12PM slot."

This quote implies that my show was deemed "not professional sounding enough" by the office guys. I highly resent the implication that my show was professional at all.

You mean they're not still using tape echo?

Wow! Love Dave Ortiz, Love Bobby Fenton, Go Mike Pepper! Go 1010 CBS Sports!

Hey CBSBoardOp, you have been very quiet lately. Why have we not heard any dirt from directly from under the floorboards inside the hallowed halls of CBS on the ratings fiasco??? Several threads are running on this topic. Are you still there or did YOU get busted? Inquiring minds want to know!

Greetings. I'm new to the board, but I find this topic very intriguing as I listen to 1010 every day at work.
It's a bit of a shame that the Sports Chix aren't on the air anymore, but I can honestly say I won't miss it too much. Their show wasn't terrible, but I didn't find it as good sports talk radio. I really felt that Lesley brought Nothing to the table in terms of sports talk. Lynn would have been better in there with Roxanne Wilder.
As much as I hate that he's a homer for UF, I would love to see Bobby Fenton back on the air in that noon to 3 slot, however I don't know how much of a chance he has to get into Rome's ratings on 620. I do hope they bring in something local though. T-Kraz had a good show last week. I don't like what's been on the air this week so far, but that may be in part to having 2 national shows back-to-back.

I love the Dan Patrick show. I'm very glad they brought that in. Sorry it cost Fenton his job, but it's great radio.

I don't like Mike Pepper hosting a show. He seems like a great guy and very knowledgeable about sports, and has a great inside to USF sports, however I don't like his delivery of show material. I think it's slow and not very interesting.

I like JP's show. It's a good alternative to Duemig. I do like Duemig's style of going head-to-head with callers and wish JP would have more debates with listeners to make for more compelling radio. I actually think T-Kraz might be a better co-host/producer for JP as they have had some good arguments with each other over their opinions.

T-Kraz and Lighthall are perfect guys for their roles. I do enjoy Lighthall chiming in about college sports and USF. That is definitely one thing I like about 1010, they are home for USF sports

...lol.yeah, except for the cash cow, USF Football...and until that station boosts its signal, you ll never hear it on that station...

Clean house, hire real hosts, and put it on 94.1 already.
