1010 WCOC?

yep a dw tr, wow what a mess and over almost nothing of a station.

This is slightly off topic, but isn't it kinda strange that Joy Christian bought two money pit stations involved with land disputes. Of course, one was WRSM. The other one was WXRP AM 1170 in Hanceville. The owner of the land where the transmitter site had passed away, and the new owners forced the station off the land. All that exist now is the studio, which was an old house on College Drive behind Hardee's. In fact, one can still see the glue outline which says WRJL AM 1170, since WRJL was the old calls before the WXRP calls existed.

Not off topic at all. It's a perfect example of why LEASING land for your AM tower/transmitter site is a very BAD idea. Somebody buys the land for a shopping center, and you're outta there. AM stations require a ground system and are not exactly "portable" ...... some older AM stations are shoe-horned in tightly under grandfathered rules. If somebody else owns the land under your AM tower or towers, you are setting yourself up to get screwed.

Why is the Hanceville studio still there? I thought they were planning to build more apartments...... Where did the tower go? I always thought that the Catholic fellas who bought that station were in way over their heads on that project. Did they ever get it back on?

1170 Hanceville, now WQHC is on sort of. They are running 10 watts from a whip antenna about 25 feet up. Last time I could hear it, there was no audio just dead air. It quickly fades about 2 miles out. The "studio" is in a Catholic bookstore.

That's ridiculous. Sounds like John Martignoni (sp?) is in way over his head on that one.

Back to WCOC..... How many years ago did AM 1010 move into the house on Highway 78? Was it a nice facility before the vandals trashed it? Anybody know how many acres?

I know it was there in the mid 90 S, Bill Morrow at WMGJ in gadsden will know all about that property at woco he is there at WMGJ on the air in the afternoon.

Other than the "imaginary" move to Gardendale, did Paul Johnson or any of the previous owners try to upgrade or at least get more night power for this station?

Yes, Paul did,but the 47 watts I think it was , was all that the fcc would give and they wanted to run at night for the ball games ,but the 47 watts did not even make it to the ball park, so they gave up the night time idea real fast.

The Azteca Communications / La Que Buena guys had a big promissory note, owed to Paul Johnson.

Paul died in February. Did he ever get the rest of his money for the station?
