1010 WINS FINALLY YIELDS TO 101.9

Listening to 1010 WINS this afternoon, I noticed they finally changed their "sign-off phrase" from
"This is 1010 WINS, New York's one and only all news station" to "More people get their news from 1010 WINS than from any other radio station in the nation".

It's not an old quote; they've used it before for anchor sign-offs. This comes after FM News 101.9 sent CBS Radio a cease and desist letter threatening legal action if 1010 WINS kept saying "NY's one and only all news station". 1010 WINS gave in to WEMP, so I guess...score one for them?

Copying ABC News in the 80s and 90s

Do you remember, "More people Get their news from ABC News than any other network in the nation.... this is World News Tonight: with Peter Jennings".

Great Times!

I would have just dropped the "one and only."

"This is 1010 WINS, New York's all news station." I don't think Merlin could quibble with that from a legal standpoint and many listeners probably wouldn't have noticed the difference.

CBS "yielded" to its own legal department...Merlin just pointed out the inaccuracy of the positioning statement. WEMP is a gnat buzzing around WINS's head...not much more and they never will be.

KGO-TV in the 1990's a phrase like this "More people Get their news from Channel 7 News than any other source in Northern California" the Nor Cal ABC O&O used the Network VO Staff for that slogan.

If I recall correctly, ABC's positioner said, "More Americans get their news from ABC News..." as opposed to "more people..."

So what does Merlin do here? Continue tweaking WINS. I'd start airing a new slogan that went something like this: "More New York radio listeners get their news from FM News 101.9 than any other major household appliance." ::)

Look KGO-AM 810 did use a WEMP type phrase "Non-Stop bay area News for 10 Minutes". That Phrase is based on the fact that KCBS740/106.9 San Francisco has to air the CBS hourly news for 5-6 minutes. Look KGO-AM 810 is basically the California edition of WEMP. Look at KCBS they answers back and said "The only-All News Station in the Bay Area". Look guys even a Cumulus owned station like KGO is resorting to WEMP tactics. These tactics are not only a Merlin problem they are also a problem for people who want to take on a flagship CBS O&O All-news station.
