102.1 and 104.5 HD changes

I noticed yesterday early morning that Q102's HD-2 channel had stopped playing Spanish-language music and was now playing some sort of top 40 format (Buckcherry into Wyclef), while up the dial at 104.5, the "Classic Alternative" was replaced by what was previously at 102.1.

Anyone know whats up? thoughts?

If a format change is made on a HD 1 or 2 channel, and no one has a HD radio to hear it, did the format change actually happen...?

I have HD but the only HD-2 channels I listen to are WXPN HD-2 (Y-rock) and WYSP HD-2 (KYW 1060). KYW sounds great in FM stereo! Most of the time I'm listening to WMMR HD-1. or WPHT-HD. I haven't listened to 104.5 HD-2 since they took away the sunlight lounge.

I have HD and I have no idea why these stations think these HD-2 channels would appeal to anyone with an HD radio.

Top 40 and Spanish-language pop? I can't wait to get back to my car and adjust my presets!

Exactly, they've got this new technology allowing for two extra feeds of ANYTHING, and the majority are pumping in feeds from corporate headquarters. Though I do give XPN, MMR and MGK props for their HD-2 channels.

Anyways, I heard a liner yesterday on WRFF-2 and they're calling it "Rumba 104.5 HD-2". Rumba returns to FM! Still no clue on 102.1. Maybe they're dedicating a channel to songs played at REGULAR SPEED.

Most of the songs sound faster on Q102 because they're trying to fit more ads in between them.

I fixed your post for you.
i always thought q102 sped up there songs because it was more of a party station..

You don't need to speed up the songs they play in order to make it a party station. You could accomplish that by cranking up the bass, too, but they don't do that.

Besides, who parties in the middle of a workday?

It's always been argued that pitching up the music makes the station sound "hotter" and "more fun." If say you heard a song on Q pitched up, and then on Wired un-pitched... you'd think it sounded better on Q.

Sure they can fit in more commercials, but they can also squeeze in an extra song every other hour or so this way.

Personally, I think it sounds like total crap pitched up, but that's just my opinion.

Agreed. One of my favorite pop songs of 2007 was Kanye West's "Stronger" that sampled Daft Punk. It's a great song that they have in regular rotation now, but they pitch it up so as to remove any of the snarl from West's voice. When Q102 plays it, it sounds like it's being sung by a little boy.

And I would be willing to count and time out a couple hours to prove this stupid little theory of mine.

Speeding up the music, altering, or changing the pitch is a tragic fatal mistake that will further precipitate the decline of terrestrial radio, and its subsequent listening patterns. The listening perception, of invariably speeding up a song, particularly by anyone who is familiar with or has downloaded any of these songs, is that the music has been tampered with. And that will inextricably be a fatal blow to terrestrial broadcasters, as a whole, if that perception prevails. Some programmers may be too young to remember what accelerated the imminent demise of WFIL, WMID, and AM Radio in general. One of which was unnecessarily, tampering with the music, and it’s presentation.

102.1 was rumba too. Rumba always had been advertising it since they moved to AM

Maybe they think by moving it to 104.5 HD2 it will be like havning the orignal rumba back?

Probably. I also seems that WUSL dropped "Xtreme Hip Hop" in favor of an old-school type format. I noticed this when I tuned in and they were playing Terence Trent D'Arby instead of an "artist" whose name starts with "T" or "Lil'"

I think Clear Channel is doing the same thing in New York with Z-100's HD-2 station (which used to be all interviews of pop stars). The main signal is current Top 40, and the HD-2 is Top 40 from the last 10 years. Together, they're like XM's two CHR stations, Hit List (recurrent-heavy) and 20 on 20 (what's hot right now). I think the two stations compliment each other.
