It's amazing how well this SD rimshot station comes in at Zuma Beach, even without the power boost. For some reason it is among the 4 or 5 most-reliable FM signals in western Malibu.

The TJ sticks, KPBS and KPRI seem to be the best signals here, when the salt water coax is up. KOLA and the IE signals come in, too. When it's down, about 30 percent of the time, the LA stations come in via knife edge better.

And you know what's really weird? For about 500 feet of PCH just west of Carbon Canyon, SD and LA are blocked completely and SLO/Central Coast stations appear on frequencies like 89.3 and 97.1.

I've noticed the majority of SD signals show up strongly
west of Goleta along the 101...until it veers north into the
mountains: nice line-of-site path across the water.
______________

Cool. Wonder if KGB will complain about such short-spacing between the 101.5 and 102.1 transmitters.
______________

Why not? They did it before.
IN fact, that's what suprises me! Last time when they just wanted to move the transmitter a little closer (back in the old Rock 102.1 days, when DSC will still there), that's exactly what KGB did! Now they want to move to Soledad?
What's that SDRadio likes to say?
Stay uhmmm.... Oh yeah, STAY TUNED!

That would not be considered short spacing 600mhz

Well, there goes my clear reception of La Nueva 101.9 from L.A. if and when 102.1 moves to Mt. Soledad. Adios KSCA.
Two radio station transmitters each more than 30kw spaced about ten miles apart broadcasting 0.6MHz from each other sounds like a rarity in radio. Are there any other precedents of radio stations having another major wattage local station stepping 0.6MHz from each other?
______________

There is no short spacing to KGB, which is adjacent and next adjacent... the spacing issyue was with 102.5 in Tijuana. The FCC and the SCT reached an agreement to allow grater power on 102.5 and the 102.1 move, and, also, allowing KLQV to go non-directional.

Re: 102.1 and 102.9

Just out of curiosity, how will making 102.9's signal non-direction improve it's signal? Or far that matter, what good does it do for 102.9 at all?
Just curious...

It gives them a better throw to el Norte County, for one, G-dawg.
______________

Being in Mt. Soledad, I thought they already had a good shot? Which way was their (our) old signal pointed, then?

It currently nulls towards the Mexican border, with ERP in that direction about 20% of what it is in other directions. Since about 70% of the Hispanic population is south of downtown, the station could double its numbers when this is done.

North County will not have any change. The signal will be let out to the south, and stay the same from about 200 degrees to about 110 degrees true.

It was nulled towards Tijuana, and the equivalent of 32 kw in all other directions. Now it will be 32 kw in all directions.

It's actually very GOOD news for KSCA, at least where its local audience is concerned, since the move will eliminate the existing short-spacing between KPRI and KSCA.

What's happening here is called "grandfathered short-spacing." Any FM stations that were authorized prior to Nov. 16, 1964, and which met the spacing standards then in effect, are still governed by those spacing standards if they've remained short-spaced under the current standards ever since.

In particular, the pre-1964 standards had NO restrictions on stations 0.4 or 0.6 MHz from each other, and so stations that predate those standards can move in right next door to each other if they want, as long as they meet the rest of the spacing rules now in effect.

One good example of how this works in practice is Philadelphia, where there are stations on 103.9 and 104.5 in the same tower farm. Philly's also about to get a move-in from Trenton on 97.5, third-adjacent to WOGL-FM 98.1. Both stations predate the 1964 spacing rules, so they can do this with no spacing restrictions toward each other.
______________

** I'm VERY PLEASED with the news. KPRI-FM is by far my favorite station and those 'boosters' downtown were sometimes too weak. I mean, trying to listen to 102.1 was impossible from a clock radio in the OMNI Hotel - Starting soon.. I can finally listen to Authentic Rock in pure 32,000 watt glory when staying at the OMNI downtown relaxing after a Padre win!! =) Joe G www.SoCalSpinner.com
Edited by goriajk on 03/08/06 09:55 AM.

Hmm. Wasn't it not too long ago when a small independent station: KKOS got a frequency change & power boost? If I recall, it wasn't too long after that when the station was sold to then Jacor. Could this be a precursor to the station being sold to a large conglomerate now that the station has more value?

Good good point.. Bob Hughes and Jonathan Schwartz wanna retire someday I would think! I remember KKOS they were on 95.9 FM same as Anaheim's KEZY and in South Orange County you could fade out one and get the other if you were in the right spot. I have some airchecks of the station KKOS became when they moved to 95.7 - KUPR with Mike Halloran at the helm....

** I still have an ad from 08-95 in the U-T .. "On Sept 15th, 95.7 - This Changes Everything..." -With a picture of a busted up transistor radio. They were right, the freq chg caused KKOS to morph into KUPR and it went down from there. I say to Hughes and Schwartz "No MORE KUPR's!!" Do not change ANYTHING from the quality programming KPRI is doing now. Peace - JG www.SoCalSpinner.com

I believe they have been trying to sell the station for quite a while but have priced it out of the market. Increasing the follow of the station can never hurt either the current operators or the future operators. Most station valuations start with the coverage of the population.
