102-1X

Tuned in to 102.1 last night and, to my surprise, heard the old 102-1X broadcasting in mono, sans booster, most likely.
______________

It is, though I'm sure they're just using the old automated format to keep the signal live.
______________

Well that would make sense really. Since NRC bought the station, I am sure they would have to turn it on to satisfy the requirements. ITs interesting that they choose out of all the automation formats that station has had to air Dance?
You know 102.1 is one of the most missed up station out of all the radio stations in this part of Colorado. I am glad that NRC bought and would do something with it for once. I hope its something benifitcal to colorado.
______________

The old KXDC dance format was probably easy to flip back on. It was completely automated, liners were already done, etc. The U102 and Thunder Country formats were live and satellite, respectively, so it's harder to fire those back up on a whim.
______________

Ahhh, and I thought that when it was simlucasting 101.9 that they earased all the data from that format? Figuring they would never use the Dance format ever again in the future. Correct me if I am wrong but isn't KXDC studio's still in Estes Park? Cause I have been wondering about that for yrs now.. or is it in Denver somewhere?
______________

They do still have a studio in Estes Park, but that's more to fulfill an FCC requirement than anything else. Their real studio is in Denver at 8975 E. Kenyon, the old KHOW building. It's just off Yosemite and I-225. It used to be pretty parked up in the days of U102, but since that station's demise, it's sat more or less empty.

My understanding was that Superior bought the building prior to launching U102. With their sale of 102.1, I'm not sure what the fate of the building is. Maybe it'll be a home base for Bustos Media's 101.9 or perhaps Superior will hold onto it for 104.7 KSKE?
______________

What is a station good for if you can't hear it?

That goes for any format on a crappy signal.
______________

Did you know that KHIH was in that buidling to? I did a search on that address and came up with that.
Well now I know and all this time I thought it was still up in Estes Park! Well if any 104.7 station goes on the air wouldn't that hurt KELS-LP out of Greeley?? Since they are both on the same frequency?
______________

Yep. It was the old KHOW AM/FM building. KHOW-FM, of course, later became KHIH.

KELS-LP probably won't be affected too terribly, as it's really low power and an upgraded KSKE would never reach Greeley anyway.
______________

Why wouldn't an upgrade to KSKE not be able to reach Greeley? That is kinda of an odd thing to say really? If they move KSKE out the mountains doesn't the transmitter tower have to follow as well?
I never heard of any Denver station not being able to be heard up in Northern Colorado at all.
Its nice to see a building being used for Radio and nothing else.

You can't hear KGDQ 101.9 very well in Greeley, I bet.
______________

It's a non-issue. LPFM is a secondary service and may be bumped with or without its consent for a primary service.

I spoke with management yesterday and they plan on going a different direction when NRC officially has ownership of the signal.
______________

AND will be WIPED OUT in Denver Metro anyway by 102.3 (whatever they ultimately decide to put there and call it).

So, really...Talk of a station at 102.1 is a moot point. I say let some poor saps have it to put a few Part 15 LPFMs on there like they no doubt have in a few other places on the Denver FM dial.

Cheers for now :)

Well that is good, I always give them credit for thinking outside of the box and being totally creative with a new station! I hope they can find away to move the transmitter out of the darn mountain so it can be heard somewhat!
______________

Well they might just think about putting a boaster with it, like what alot of Radio Stations compaines have done so far to boost the power! So it would be interesting in teh next couple of months before summer to see what well happen with 102.1. I am sure the people over at NRC are trying to figure out this major problem right now.
