102.3 Edenton

What ever happened to WZBO-FM 102.3 in Edenton? They were a good AC station in the early 80's. The WZBO-AM 1260 moved to Elizabeth City and is still around.

I really like 102.5 The Shark. It is the main button on my car radio. Even when I had XM/Sirius I would listen to them. I am glad they have not turned into an all classic rock station but still play some pop / bubblegum music. Reminds me of the good old days when there was a lot of variety on the radio.

I like them but man I wish they would fix the audio chain. Sometimes it's OK and sometimes it's unlistenable. Something generates a loud hiss that apparently overtakes the audio if the source isn't being run hot enough.

They sounded better to me on my last trip to the OBX a couple of weeks ago than they did when I was out there last year. Last year they sounded distorted. They don't seem to have the signal strength they once had either. The signal is very poor in Rodanthe and I remember it being much better years ago. Maybe they can go for 100KW now that Don Curtis has moved 102.5 westward from Louisburg to Hillsborough. I think it would certainly help.

102.5 The Shark has never had good audio. Sometimes it is better but poor quality compared to most on the local FMs. WZBO AM 1260 is still in Edenton but is simulcast with WCNC 1240 Elizabeth City.

Retspin, you are right about the signal strength. 102.5 also used to have a much better signal in Greenville and Washington than they do now.

I have heard the audio quality sound good and sound horrible. Like I said, I think something generates a hiss that the processor just exacerbates if the source material isn't loud enough. I heard a syndicated show on there once that was literally half hiss/half audio. You can also hear the hiss gain up between words when the jocks are talking dry.

Maybe they are having trouble with the antenna. I don't know how long an FM antenna is supposed to last, but I know when WTIB replaced theirs a while back there was a noticeable improvement in the signal where I live.

FM antenna systems should get routine inspection and maintenance. Lightning, corrosion and ice are common problems. Owners do not like to spend the money for a qualified tower climber to inspect.

Also, FM station have coverage problems sometimes, seems worse in the summer. I'm having problems listening to Henry on WTIB. 103.7 in Richmond booming on. I don't think WTIB is having problems, it's just tropo conditions.

The air chain on 102.5 has been cleaned up A LOT. I am actually in Columbia right now listening and it's clean audio with good stereo separation. There's a jock talking dry right now but I can't hear a hiss in the background at all.

I have heard this station at least once where I live. I don't remember what I thought of it. But I shouldn't be picking up a station this far away. I have picked up Star 102.5 west of Fayetteville on occasion, and it comes in more often in the car.

Hello vchimp. With all of the tropo here in NC, stations are heard much farther away from time to time. I regularly get FM from Greensboro and Fayetteville markets here in the NE corner of NC.

It's much more rare for me to get FM stations from your area. I occasionally pick up Wilmington or Myrtle Beach stations. Fayetteville stations are a more regular occurrence.

WERX solid here 24/7. Never hear anything else on 102.5 even with strong tropo and e skip. I'm about 27 miles from their tower. I get regular tropo out to around 200 miles. Depending on which channel.
