102.5 KXAM

As I drove from the RGV to Houston this weekend, I stumbled across a bizarre mix of English CHR recurrents (Lady Gaga "Alejandro", Justin Bieber "Baby") and regional Mexican music. There were no legal IDs, but there were Spanish-speaking announcers selling up some songs, although never giving a station name.

Knowing this information, I had to wonder, could this be Hispanic Target Media's latest creation? And indeed, it is. 102.5 KXAM, a Class A licensed to San Diego (the Texas one), is now on the air.

Back in the 80s this format was popular in South Texas... although it was Tejano and not Mexican Regional that was mixed with pop/dance and country. And if you went to the Tejano clubs, they were playing this mix, too. It's not just a music format but a lifestyle format unique to the region.

Was that Tejano/pop/country combo what KIWW was playing? I meet a number of people who still remember that station.

I was impressed listening to a little of KXTN today, as well - 70's R&B, Tejano currents (as far as I can tell; not a Tejano expert), and a ticket giveaway to see George Strait. A far cry from the full-time Tejano formats on KBUC 102.1 and KSAB 99.9.

That sounds exactly like KXAF and KRIK. Hispanic Target Media just needs to get something over here in San Antonio so I can tune in to their random jukebox LOL.

Did you by chance get an air check you're able to upload?

Go to www.fccinfo.com, type in Hispanic Target Media Inc as the licensee, look at all their new radio station applications! I have a feeling we'll see lots more soon enough.

Now if only they all had great programmers in charge...

While it doesn't citygrade San Antonio and won't be listenable on every radio, I had no trouble picking up Hispanic Target Media's KGWT 93.5 on a car radio a few years ago. From what either this or the San Antonio/Austin board said, it's been through a wheel of formats recently.

Yeah KGWT comes in here in Northwest SA but only sometimes at night. And it's been country since last year, though before then it was Spanish.

We were at the lake yesterday and I tuned into KXAF and it was on the air but just airing dead air. Not sure how long it's been silent. Do they even have a studio for KXAF with a staff or at least a full time chief operator as required by the FCC? If not you'd think with all the money HTM is investing in all these stations they'd have a silence sense connected to a remote control or have the ability to reset their automaton computer. This isn't the first time I've heard it broadcasting dead air nor is it their only station I've heard this on. I've heard KRIK silent a few times also.

Their Perry Florida station, WAJP, is airing dead air right now, if this stream's to be believed. http://live.str3am.com:3080/

And I've never heard live DJs on any of their stations either, seems they're all automated but unfortunately they don't do a great job LOL.

Well, the WAJP stream seems to work now, it plays country!

And I heard what I think is KXAF last night here in San Antonio, coming in real faint but it WAS silent. I did hear some interference as if something was toggling on and off every second, a 60 cycle hum turning on and off. Might have been the tower lights flashing.

I picked up KXAM for the first time tonight in San Antonio - it's simulcasting Hispanic Target Media's 95.9 station in Yuma (Regional Mexican - Radio Amigo).

Sounds as if there's too much midrange on their equalizer, and from the sound of the music the connection's not very stable.
It doesn't skip but it does sound like it could start doing so at any minute.

Yeah I heard the station a few weeks ago while going through there on my way to Laredo. It was buffering and cutting off. Such a waste of a signal.

oh and by the way...I did get to tune in and hear 93.3 KLIT on my way in to Laredo a few weeks ago. I'll post my findings in that thread here shortly.

I know this sounds crazy but I'm in San Antonio and I just picked up regional Spanish on 103.9 - (turns out it is KJJS in Zapata)!
I heard the ID list KJJS as well as 6 or 7 others. Seems as if the engineer likes bass, there's plenty of it.

It's "skip" time. I heard a station from east Texas in Austin and the announcer was explaining to his listeners why there were other signals interfering with his show.
