102.7 Austin translator now airing KGSR

I seem to remember reading in the Chronicle when KGSR made the move from 107 that this was the long-term plan. I think this is primarily for South Austin?

Is anyone getting a better signal on 102.7 than 93.3?

93.3 better in all radios, esp. my HD Radio, it can lock HD real good probally because I am not too far from Cedar Park.

When I lived in South Austin I could pick up 102.7 (as KOKE and KITY) real well unless it was a clear night, I didn't pick it up real good until I got to 38th and Guadalupe (central Austin)

93.3 has a better signal to me every where than 102.7.

All of this makes little sense. 102.7 adds very little to 93.3. It also is perplexing why they put Mega on 102.7 and then weeks later ripped it off. If the economics are that bad, maybe dance shouldn't even get an HD2 station.

Also, Emmis doesn't even seem to want to acknowledge their translators. Rarely mentioned on 590 or 93.3 except for top-of-the-hour IDs.

Pleeeeeeease dump the 590 translator and give Mega back. I will do (almost) anything you want, Krash. For serious ...

Mega mentioned "the deal fell through" when they pulled the plug no 102.7. Maybe someone had promised to underwrite the analog broadcast and decided against it. Commercial stations aren't going to survive long without commercials.

the 102.7 frequency makes no sense with KGSR especially if they are trying to get a better signal in South Austin lol. Also Dance can survive in Austin. Go to any Dance/Electronica club in the city or to any EDM event here and you can see how many people like dance. I can understand the issue with a non-commercial station on the FM dial though.

It worked so well the first time it was tried, didn't it? Mega 93.3 got a fair amount of time to succeed and couldn't. What makes you think it would work now? Just because people will listen to it in the clubs doesn't mean it will work. That was the premise behind the attempt at "Rock With A Beat" in Los Angeles in '89 and the more recent "Movin'" format. Both were good ideas on paper; neither worked in the real world.

Krash - I -will- do *anything* to get it back on the air.

I would doubt the Director of Programming would have anything to do with that decision, its probably higher up the chain. Just go get a cheap HD radio at Best Buy or listen to Mega online - but it would be nice back on FM_________________________________________________

it has been 8 to 9 years since the first Mega 93.3 the demographics have changed and the city is larger. Top 40 is steadily heading toward Dance music, while at the time of Mega 93.3, Top 40 was moving away toward Hip Hop. Lets not forget that when they started that format it was brand new, they had no solid playlist and they kept tweaking it nearly on a weekly basis. Mega HD2 has a solid playlist since it has been on HD for awhile now so its not like they were starting from scratch. We have a strong base of Dance music enthusiasts in this city and a Dance station can be supported. You don't need to have a top rated station as long as it brings in money it can fit in as a Nitch format and has listener support. You can't judge how 102.7 was doing at all since it was on the air less than two weeks, but it did get a listener base during that time and it was growing by the day even with the crappy signal until they pulled the plug on it.
