102.7 History

ksradiogeek said:
Before Jack, what was on 102.7? I know it was V103 for many years, then XYV and B, but can't remember what else was on there.
It was a classical station before it became V-103 in 1977. Boy V-103 Baltimore is truely missed :'(

V104 was blown up for 102.7 XYV in '97, later called B-102.7. When the B started fading, a signal swap was made, The B moved to 105.7 and became X-105.7 Hip-Hop. The heritage oldies station WQSR was moved to 102.7, and stayed there for a few years before becoming Jack FM. Wikipedia should have this info.

Wikipedia does, but given its sketchy history and people constantly doing weird things to it (like adding false info and capitalizing every word), I don't exactly rely on that for history pages of stations. Why did the B fail? I thought CHR had a resurgence in the 2000's after the bust in the 90's? Also, why did V103 flip?

V-103 was the station not V-104 there was a B-104

V-103 flipped because the station was sold 3 times between 1994-1997 and it became mismanaged and once Granam Commnications let then V-103 morning host now WVEE host Frank Ski go to WERQ-92Q that was the end of the V because it caused a ratings slide. IMO it caused Baltimore`s Urban radio market never to be the same because IMO WERQ SUCKS but that is just my opinion.

Yeah, the 'X'!

The home of Li'l Mo...along with the ever ubiquitous Quick Silva and his alter ego...'Slow Gold'.

Yeah and X-105.7 lasted what....3 months at the most, I still think 102.7 will flip back to R&B because even though i like Jack-FM, The ratings are poor. Clear Channel would be stupid to let WERQ be the only R&B in Baltimore, Im surprised that CBS hasnt flipped 105.7 to hip hop\R&B. It seems to be a good format that works well in Big cities.

Baltimore has already lost two major urban stations in the past why would any company ever
try it again that ship has sailed. WPGC and WKYS are Baltimore's other urban hip-hop crossover stations.

B-102.7 failed because at the time 102.7, a top 40 station, and MIX 106.5, a hot ac, were both owned by CBS Radio. Top 40 and Hot AC are similarly formatted and they began competing with each other. B102 had higher ratings, but MIX106 had higher sales numbers, so they got rid of B.

WPGC and WKYS are not directly in the Baltimore market and if it was so much of a failure then how do you explain WERQ number 1 in the latest ratings and 95.9 number 2? There is a market for that format if its done right.

I agree that 92Q needs some health competition, but what frequency should it go on. Imo, I think Jack will be here a while. It runs jockless, so it doesn't cost much money to run. It doesn't even have its own studio. Jack is ran from one of the production studios in Clear Channel's Rockville facillity. Maybe, CBS can change its new HFS frequency, 97.5...?

No PGC and Kiss are not directly in the Baltimore market but because of signal overlap they are a part of the Baltimore market. 92q and Magic have no direct format competition so that helps their numbers we have been there done that with competion for WERQ V-103 gone x-1057 gone CBS had no paticence too make their urban efforts work in Baltimore its not going too happen the support and ad money is just not there in market 21.

Why not put it on 105.7 again, I mean i seen the latest ratings on that station and they are dismal to say the least, Talk radio on FM dont work here in Baltimore...Its a waste of an fm signal, Personally id like to see oldies return but i doubt that will happen anytime soon.

I would love to see them put an urban back on 105.7, but I doubt that will happen. Generally the sports station trends upwards during the football season. The last two consecutive football seasons they have been in the top ten ratings wise. They are willing to live with that. Urbans cost a lot of money to run and Radio One specializes in the urban format. Truth is even if there was another urban to come to Baltimore, 92Q is a powerhouse and they will stick around. On the other hand, if you have an HD Radio, 104.3's HD2 station in Baltimore is urban and they sound much better than 92Q. They even have new tracks before 92Q.

Baltimore is not getting anymore Urban stations HD Radio(I agree) and the Bigger DC Urban stations will be and are 92Q`s competition.
