102.7 KIIS FM L.A. - A LITTLE LESS RHYTHMIC?

102.7 KIIS-FM just played No Doubt's "Bathwater", and they've also finally started playing "Mr. Brightside" by The Killers in the past couple of weeks. In addition, certain Recurrents like Maroon 5 "She Will Be Loved", and "This Love" are back in rotation.

I say it's about time. "Rhythmic" music has always been a divisive genre: you either love it or you hate it -- and this goes all the way back to the days of Disco. And ever since Rap fans and non-Rap fans branched off to Rhythmic CHR and Hot AC in the early '90s, respectively, mainstream CHR has always been stuck in the middle, trying to blend together different genres that just don't mix well. So in order to develop a cohesive playlist, mainstream CHR stations often develop a certain "lean" -- more towards Rhythmic, more towards Rock, or more towards AC-ish Pop. And this can even change during different parts of the day -- there are many CHR's which get edgier and more upbeat during times when lots of teenagers are listening, and get mellower and more AC-ish during the weekday 9-to-5 shift in order to encourage at-work listening.
