102.7 MECCA

Winning bid of $254,000 in the fm auction for 102.7, col Mecca near Palm Springs by Sunnylands, owner of the 92.1 Thermal and 2 fm's in 29 Palms, one of which (105.3) has an app. to move to North Shore on 105.1.

the signal for the app to move to 105.1 fm wont be a huge signal most likely 3000 to 6000 watt station as it would interfer with go country, and 102.7 fm wont be a big signal either most likely 6 thousand watts thats it, otherwise it would interfer with KIIS in LA, wonder what the format will be? as palm springs has every format except Alternative or active rock, but i doubt palm Springs would welcome an active rock station, too many retirees, not enough kids.

The Coachella Valley is far beyond the protected contours of a normalized Class B from LA. And in any event, the valley is essentially a "hole in the ground" surrounded by mountains of up to 10,000 feet; signals don't get out of the valley much farther than about Cabezon or Banning to the west.

A class A is more than adequate to cover the market. The top 4 stations, with 40 shares in 25-54 between them, are all Class A's.

The year-round retirement community is nowhere nearly as large as most people imagine; a large portion of the senior community is made up of "snowbirds" who are neither permanent residents nor do they usually qualify for getting onto the ratings recruit lists.

The market is, however, 49.9% Hispanic and the Hispanic community is considerably younger on average than the US national average... so you actually have a rather young community, too.

A slight correction - 92.1 Thermal is owned by Copper Mtn. Broadcasters, not Sunnylands. Copper Mtn. owns FMs in Joshua Tree and 29 Palms.

BTW - Sunnyland's 105.3 was put on the air in Yermo, near Barstow. Then it moved it's COL to 29 Palms, now it's skipping to North Shore.

Yermo to North Shore is about 125 miles as the crow flies. Anyone know of a hop, skip and a jump move-in that's gone farther than that?
