102-7 NOW IS ON!

Since he's already in the Beasley building, I will guess that former KLUC personality Lumpy "the boy toy" will be part of the NOW airstaff.
 
I find the way in which KLUC management has responded to the new station very interesting. The day 102-7 flipped, Cat Thomas totally freaked out. They put out a memo and called staff meetings stating that Beasley management was "taking food off their table". They even called out several Beasley upper management members saying that "they are no longer permitted at CBS Radio events or family get togethers". Plus, Cat mentioned in the same memo that he "will not rest until these people are homeless"! From what I understand, some other KLUC staff members are even blogging about the new station on Myspace and Facebook.

Haven't they been up against new competition in the past? This is not the way the heritage station should respond. Pretty amateur, if you ask me. Seems like they're scared.

I haven't heard a peep out of KVEG and their PD has much less experience. Maybe "Las Vegas Radio Legend" Cat Thomas is losing his edge.
 
Cat Thomas doesnt freak out. Hes a competitor and he plays to win. You have to take into account that the a good amount of the people that made the decision to flip to Top 40 and go directly after KLUC are old friends of Cats. How would you feel if your friends tried to take your job? Cat doesnt get angry he gets even. I feel bad for 102.7
 
The stuff I am hearing out of KLUC is not conducive to the "doesn't get angry" you wrote. I think he's actually quite angry.

Truth of the matter is (finally) there is something interesting coming from the Las Vegas market, and it directly involves his station. I don't think KLUC is strong enough to withstand all blows...if Now comes out of the box with awful talent and promotions, then they'll be fine, but if they throw money at this station, KLUC could be in a world of trouble.

Lets see if they keep the 102 minutes of music up, keep the DJ's moving, and get some good, "sticky" promotions...if they do, then Cat should be pissed.

I feel bad for someone, but I'm not sure who yet.
 
NOW is certainly trying to get KLUC angry. I heard a sweeper that said "While Spence, Lauren, and that other old guy are talking, we're playing 102 minutes of music".

Sounds like a typical overconfident KLUC employee.
 
KLUC will be just fine...considering the station has had 5 great PD's since becoming top 40 in 1977...Dave Anthony, Dave Van Stone, Bill Richards, Jerry Dean, and Cat Thomas...Beasley should have gone after Mix..and at least be 2nd best...now they are gonna be one of 3 or 4 choices....Fresh was the WORST sounding station EVER in Vegas, at least NOW is an improvement, but is boring and stale musically...you also need PEOPLE to do a format like that justice...KLUC, HOT, and MIX are live 24/7...Beasley is what's wrong with radio...and TOP 40 is an expensive format to run, they should have gone after MIX's upper-end...would have been much easier and much less costly, which we all know is more to their liking....This station may not even last as long as FRESH did...

KLSX/L.A. had 75% of KIIS's listeners prior to adding "talent". Times they are a changing.
 
So, any word on how things are going at the new station? I'll admit, it's not my type of music so I haven't listened much. But I just cruised by the website and the "talent" page is still blank... Nothing on the "concerts" or "video" pages either. And their Twitter page only has five or six updates since the station launched! Not too impressive right out of the gate.

I agree. I think if they keep the 102 minutes of music they could be dangerous for KLUC. With the PPM world coming to Las Vegas that could be a major blow.
 
I have been hearing NOW on a lot. The last 5 times I heard a rhythmic station on in public it was 102.7. If PPM was here I think you would be seeing they are off to a good start. But by the time PPM does arrive in LV, 102.7 won't have the novelty of being brand new, the "curiosity cume"...not to say they won't be able to hold on to it. This will be a fun battle to watch. I have no idea how it will turn out. KLUC does have a good long term track record against competitors.

One thing I appreciate about KVEG right now is they are not playing "Don't Trust Me". I can't stand that song and hope they never add it.
 
102.7 NOW sounds totally fresh from the last time I listened! I like the intros, the imaging, and the 102 minutes of music... with the right promotion and interaction, can it not get into the upper numbers?

Rolling average - includes 2 months of Fresh. This is diary not PPM... most stations in diary take 60-90 days to show anything. The fact that most of the cume held is always good news.
 
I agree. It takes a long time for any new station to get any kind of numbers in diary, even a CHR. Especially considering the station was "Fresh" (P35-54 demo) before hand. I can't image any old Fresh listeners hangin' around for Now. So their cume is completely new. BTW - anyone remember how long it took Hot 97-5 to see good numbers in the diary 5 or 6 years ago? I do... a long time. Several books, maybe even over a year. But look at them now. The success of Now will remain to be seen over the next couple books. But really, probably not until PPM.
 
I very much remember what a slow start KVEG got off to. They were constantly poked fun at here on R-I (the old Southwestern board) in 2002 as sounding like a high school station. They started getting hot (no pun intended) shortly after WILD 102 came on in 2003. KWID and KLUC were really at war with each other. WILD was in total attack mode and KLUC responded back more than you would expect a hertiage station to do. Meanwhile they both ignored KVEG (and KVEG made no mention of their competitors) My impression is some in the market expected 97.5 to flip formats and let the big boys battle each other. Yet that's exactly when their ratings started going UP! In fact, soon underdog KVEG was beating both KLUC and KWID!

Getting back to the current 3 way race. Here's an anecdotal story. On Saturday I was in a store that had KLUC on. Then I drove by a car cranking Beyonce-Halo on NOW. Then I heard a car playing Mike Ps crank call on HOT. I heard all three stations within minutes of each other. This is going to be a tight battle! Although I do have a hunch that NOW could lose some momentum eventually if they don't get an airstaff (which I wouldn't expect until after the sale/frequency change takes place.
 
As always JayF, great points. I doubt Beasley will add airstaff to the station prior to the sale being final. Although, personally, I like the 102 minutes without DJ's. I can't stand a lot of the jocks on KLUC (especially JB King who screams at you while saying nothing compelling). It's too bad, I think Beasley was doing a pretty good job with their first younger demo station in Vegas. I wonder how Ed will operate it...???
