102.7 the Beach Hawaii

It's logical, if you think about it, that one of the most progressive sounding Alt-Rock stations would debut in Hawaii. I've been quite impressed thus far with what I've heard (especially with the Reggae music the station plays), and if you want to sample it yourself, go to 1027thebeach.com.

I made a mistake with the URL. It's actually 1027thebeach.fm. Sorry for the error.

Always great to hear about an alternative station DEBUTING and not going away (which seems to be the norm these days)

http://ktbh.streamon.fm/

Just gave it a listen for a bit. Heard:

Sounds good...lots of cuts you wouldn't normally hear on alt radio. Definitely not "safe" picks. Mixed in with a few familiars (Smashing Pumpkins, Capital Cities). Geared towards a Hawaiian audience no doubt! Heard Collie Buddz - "Tomorrow's Another Day" which was a nice one! A reggae jam that fits in perfectly with stuff like Sublime, Dirty Heads etc. Good luck to the station!

That's because Honolulu already has a Clear Channel Alternative KUCD - same situation as Austin and Columbus OH

Actually, the new station is a Hilo/"Big Island" outlet, and so wouldn't really compete with stations from metro Honolulu/Oahu.

See a few more details at both http://radioinsight.com/blog/headlines/84021/the-beach-to-debut-in-hilo and http://www.allaccess.com/net-news/a...-the-beach-set-to-launch-alternative-on-the-4.

Oh - that's gotta be a tiny market out there, no?

Candlebox "You" playing right now. Def digging this station! Can't remember the last time I heard that track on the radio. It's always "Far Behind".

Hilo's only got about 50,000 people or so (if that many), but the University of Hawaii does have a branch campus there.

50,000 is a stretch. But some Hilo stations have translators in places like Kona, covering more of the island.
