102.7 The Vibe- Austin

From Radioinsight:

Waterloo Media flipped Spanish CHR “Latino 102.7” 102.7 K274AX Austin/KLZT-HD2 Bastrop to Rhythmic Hot AC “102.7 The Vibe” at 6am today.

Positioning as “Austin’s Party Station”, the station is featuring a mix of currents from artists such as Bruno Mars, Ariana Grande, Drake and Cardi B and “throwback party songs” from the likes of TLC, Dr Dre, Missy Elliot, 2PAC, Mariah Carey, Nelly, Salt N Pepa, Snoop Dogg, Janet Jackson, Eminem and Destiny’s Child.

6 am playlist:
Changes- 2Pac
California Love- 2Pac Ft. Dre
Jumpin Jumpin- Destiny’s Child
Do Me- Bel Biv DeVoe
What's Your Fantasy- Ludacris
No Diggity- Blackstreet ft. Dre
Fantasy- Mariah Carey
Laugh Now Cry Later- Drake
P.I.M.P- Snoop Dogg
Regulate- Warren G
Goodies- Ciara
Go Crazy- Chris Brown
Tootsee Roll- 69 Boyz
It Wasn't Me- Shaggy
Hot Girl Bummer- Blackbear

Good job to them, filling in the hip-hop hole in Austin - wish they'd bring back Hot 93.3.

You could say that but neither 95.9 or 102.3 is like The Box in Houston or Dallas. Maybe Austin just doesn't have the demographics for it.

The Vibe has the same name as a station in San Antonio, while 102.3 The Beat has the same name as another station in San Antonio. #RandomObservation

Sounds like the Atlanta variant of Star 94. It's becoming a popular format type. Upbeat classics. Maybe some other stations in the country making the flip to this kind of format.

There's little comparison between Star 94 in Atlanta and the New Vibe 102.7 in Austin. Star leans Dance/Pop. Vibe leans Hip-Hop/R&B.

Hip hop listeners in Austin are predominantly Hispanic. In the last year or so, a large percentage Hispanic Hip hop listeners have "defected" to reggaetón based stations, which reflect their culture and not that of a different group.

So? They are separate radio markets.

This is much more appealing to Hispanics than straight-forward hip hop based urban formats.

102.7 used to be a Reggaeton playing station. Are there any others or was that it?

It was not a well done reggaetón station. The format has to be adjusted to the area, sort of like East and West coast hip hop... not visibly a huge thing, but the subtleties and mix make a big difference.

I understand what you're saying. Both stations sound very "corporate" from an imaging and personality standpoint. Their playlists are just very generic.

As far as "The Vibe", I doubt it is successful in a place like Austin. Not sure what the strategy is here by putting a format like that on a very weak translator.

Do you think the market makeup of Austin is favorable enough that another reggaeton station will likely emerge?

Wasn't the iHeart-run Tu 103.1 translator also mostly reggaeton for a time?
Yeah they had it relaying an HD2, but it went back to sports.
In 2019 103.1 was extremely weak when compared to other translators in the area, not sure why.

Not sure where you have listened from, but 103.1 is directional, with a null towards the west (from the antenna in the Austin tower farm near 360). Also, unlike most other Austin translators, 103.1 is only vertically polarized. I agree with you, that despite its height and power, this signal is not that good relatively speaking in my real world listening.

It looks like the format is returning soon to the Austin airwaves.

No details provided other than it's on "pause"

Hmm...

That tease comes from Latino's Facebook page, which means a return would be on a Waterloo station (It's possible they could acquire another translator or am+translator). Worth noting the tease has the "Latino" brand, but no frequency like their previous Facebook posts before the change.

Maybe someone at Waterloo got inside info about another company's operations?
